With acquaintances and strangers I play politically safe as you say but with family and close friends we are used to Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year! So for them politically safe is different than for others. It's not terribly confusing and not that great of an effort. When it's someone that I will surely see between Xmas and New Years, then I separate the greetings. Where I do sometimes have trouble is with the hugs and kisses, I mean in knowing what exactly others are most comfortable with. Anyhow all is well.
Oh and sometimes we answer with "All the best to you and your family" and so to me that sounds better than answering "Happy Holidays" which wouldn't even be in the running. Anyhow "Thank you, and all the Best to you and Your Family !"

I work in a hotel, in the Banquet Dept, and we decorate the entire hotel for Christmas. Every ball room has a tree, and when we set up the buffet tables or individual tables, we always use Christmas decorations for a center display. I love Christmas, I hate to see people spell Christmas Xmas. We are coming to the end of our Holiday Party season, and it's been pretty busy.
We had to get rid of the tree and all the decorations in one room a few weeks ago, it was a Bar Mitzvah, and they didn't appreciate the fact that there were so many Christmas decorations out, but not even a corner was decorated for Hanukkah. We sent someone to the Hallmark store across the street and got Hanukkah decorations, but it bugged me that we had to do this last minute, duh, Jewish people don't want a Christmas tree!!
So, wishing people Happy Holidays is a rule in our Hotel, so we don't make someone feel out of place or unimportant. I don't mind it at all. I love Christmas, but I am not so self centered to think that everyone worships as I do.
I love God, worship the Holy Trinity, and pray to our Blessed Mother on a daily basis. I have loved Mary since I was a child, and talk to her all day long about my problems because she was a woman, and a mother, so she not only knows how I feel, but what is in my heart.
This drives my in-laws crazy, since I am Catholic, and they are Baptist. My mother-in-law has been very active taking my kids to church with her, and I go to services with my husband and his family on Sundays instead of attending Catholic Mass. My mother-in-law hates it when I teach my kids Marion devotion....
So, the politically correct topic that gets my goat is people's refusal to accept that there are many forms of worship in our world, we should respect all of them, and make sure our own from of worship isn't an unintended slap in the face to others. If everyone had the attitude of acceptance and live and let live, we wouldn't be having this discussion.
A personal example is when my family and the in-laws went out to breakfast after church with some other people from church. They were discussing Mel Gibson's movie The Passion of Christ, and one of the ladies commented "He's a good Christan, well he's Catholic" said "Catholic" like it was a cuss word! I looked at my mom-in-law and told her in a loud voice "Well, nothing wrong with being Catholic is there Mom?!!"
So, being politically correct isn't such a bad thing when you are striving to not only be an example of how a Christan lives and loves his fellow man, but how to love everyone, no matter how they worship.

I work in a business with people of many different religions so Happy Holidays is the common term. It's much easier than trying to figure out which person observes which holiday. However, I much prefer to say Merry Christmas when I know that is what they will be celebrating.
MERRY CHRISTMAS to you too!!!!

I think that, in all actuality, it's really not that big of a deal. The world isn't going to end, and no one's going to get shot, if someone says Merry Christmas. Personally, I refuse to say Happy Holidays. I celebrate Christmas, and therefore will wish you a Merry Christmas.

If they say "Happy Holidays" I'll still say "Merry Christmas" back to them and if they don't like it well then that's just tough because It's CHRISTMAS not HOLIDAY and New Years Eve has it's own name because even though IT IS a holiday it ISN'T called holiday its called NEW YEARS EVE.
They are trying so hard to sabotage the Christian holiday and make it obsolete so everyone will celebrate it instead of only Christians.
But Christmas is a Christian holiday and no amount of corruption will ever change that.
Merry Christmas everyone and have a happy New Year!!!!!!!

About 10-15 years ago, I thought it appropriate, to wish folks "Happy Holidays", to ensure no one would be offended.
After it became apparent that the ACLU, and the rest of the special interest groups, were attempting to stomp out Christianity at the expense of their socialist causes, I could care less that someone may be offended.
Guess what... 99.999999% of the time, people are not offended. As they say, follow the money! These groups are in business to shakedown businesses, using the pretense of doing "good".
I wish individual Latino, Muslims, Blacks, Irish, Jewish, (you name the group), would take a stand against those organisations who speak "for" them.
Most are sick of the two Reverends (Sharpton & Jackson), as well as the ACLU, along with other fraudulent organisations.
That said:
MERRY CHRISTMAS!
Respect for all is what made this nation the greatest on Earth!

In my neck of the woods... USA... Wyoming, in particular... we are pretty conservative and "faithful" (if not religious) people. Merry Christmas is still perfectly welcomed around here, mostly because there simply are not too many people of other religions/faiths that live around here to worry about "offending."
Personally, I like wishing people Merry Christmas... it just seems more joyous... but Happy Holidays are fine if you are not sure or know someone is not Christian.
Merry Christmas to y'all!!!
Everyone is entitled to my opinion.

When I heard that Santa Claus was no longer allowed to say HO HO HO because it offended someone-I pretty much blew my stack. I will continue to say Merry Christmas and if someone doesnt like it-have me arrested. Happy Holidays works too-but only if I'm uncertain of the person's religious convictions. So-Merry Christmas to everyone in your beautiful country.

I'm not into politics, so I don't care about political correctness. We celebrate the season and the day because of "CHRIST". Diminishing "Merry Christmas" to "Happy Holidays" defeats the entire purpose of the celebration. If others prefer to say "Happy Holidays", why don't they create their own holiday, separate from Christmas? And a MERRY CHRISTMAS to you too!!

I do hate the politcally correct crap that we're supposed to say, but I've noticed I normally say happy holidays if I don't know the person well and don't know if they celebrate Christmas. If I do know it's merry Christmas.
