Well I imagine it differs quite a bit for most people. A person's public image is based on the perceptions of others toward your presentation of how you WANT to be perceved. The fact that you are trying to be perceved in a certain way does not mean you actually pull it off. Most people's presentation of themselves is based on curent trends, like whats cool, whats hip, at the molment. Your private self is based on your actual desires and the only audience is yourself, so you do not have any one to BS exept yourself, but plenty of people still try to BS themselves along with everyone else, these people, who are unable to be honest with themselves, are most likely pretty troubled people. I do not try as hard as most people, to create a big public face, and that probably explains why I am not rich and famous. My private self is something though that I would like to keep that way. If people could really see or know what I was thinking about, I would be in jail, have zero friends. I think most people think that way though, their private thoughts are wierd, but the fact is is that most people are wierd in private so that makes them not unusal or wierd either

"self image:
Inaccurate self image
The formation of a healthy self image can be challenging for an individual, especially when family, peers, community, or the general society issues very negative evaluations of a person that happen to be inaccurate. The consequences can be severe for the individual, who may learn self-hatred. They can also be severe for the society. As a European folk saying instructs, "Call a man a thief and he will steal."

Poor self image may be the result of accumulated invalid criticisms that the person collected as a child which have led to damaging his own view of himself. Children in particular are vulnerable to accepting false negative judgments from authority figures because they have yet to develop competency in evaluating such reports.

I am not sure if this will help, but I know that my private self is different than my public self. Ive noticed things I do differently while interactig with people on a public level. Like sometimes my voice gets higher when speaking to people on the street. When in private I like to dance and be slouchy but in public I try to be the most chic person around. I think the reason why people do this is because of society standards and how people protray you by the image you give off on first impresions...Like if I saw a person who looked slouchy, dirty and had their hand in their pockets I might be scarred of them...when maybe they are just having a bad day and are really shy. Hope that helps.
