For me Ozzy is the quintessential Black Sabbath front man.
Ronnie James Dio definitely took the band in a new direction with his writing style, which at the time was re-freshing for some fans of the band.
I saw the 'Black and Blue' tour in 1979 (I think), and Dio was fantastic. I saw them a couple years later with Ian Gillan, and he really ruined the show for me. His voice was terrible that night. If I recall, several people left the venue, that's how bad it was. I loved him with Deep Purple, and on his own. His 'Gillan' LP (Japanese only release) was fantastic!

But for me, he just didn't belong in Sabbath. Neither did Tony Martin in my opinion.
Ozzy for me...with Dio as runner up!

Edit - Darth -
Yeah I forgot about Glenn Hughes as well! He had a great voice, but I preferred him with Deep Purple, or Trapeze.
Don't forget about Bill Ward! He had a fairly decent voice in a Beatlish/Karen Carpenter sort of way...haaa!

Dio is by far the best vocalist of all named, no question.

However, I think Ozzy was great for Black Sabbath & a much better fit for Sabbath. Black Sabbath has always been kind of basic or deivative music (songwriting and musicianship) & so is Ozzy's vocal style.....

What made Sabbath great, they were pioneers who did something unique, first. Many bands came after them that were far better but you identify with Sabbath for creating the path.

Hey Darth, I see you are a Rush fan too!

Anyway, I also love EVERY Iommi and/or Sabbath release, as long as Tony Iommi was playing guitar. My favorite would have to be Ozzy but I also liked every other Sabbath album after he left the band.

You forgot to mention Glenn Hughes who sang on Seventh Star - I had 4th row when he sang with Sabbath back in the 80's during that tour.

Dio is the voice for Sabbath.Don't forget Ray Gillian(Jersey boy).He replaced Glen Hughes for the Seventh Star tour.He was supposed to sing on the "The Eternal Idol" cd.But Toni Iommi, and him had a falling out.So he just re-recorded the vocals with Tony Martin.
I also had the chance in the late 80's to hang out with Eric Singer(The legendary drummer) who was playing drums for Paul Stanley on his solo tour.He was so cool to hang with.He said that Iommi was real a@@-hole who still owed him money for the two albums and tours. That wasn't the only person who said that.Eric seemed cool in fact a month later at the City Gardens show he remembered me.

Ian Gillan is my favorite vocalist out of the four, but I think Ozzy did the best work with Sabbath. Dio is pretty close though.

Ozzy gets a huge first. the band was never the same after him.
then dio gets second just cause his voice is cool and he had the song holy diver which has nothing to do with sabbath i know

Ian is by far one of the greatest singers RockHist IMHO, but Ozzy sang during my favorite period of Sabbath, so I pick Ozzy - plus, I think he was the best FrontMan for the band.

OZZY's a total freak and I mean that in a good way. Dio is a very close second.
