OK, so the first CDs were released on August 17th, 1982.

According to some other answers here, there was no way to actually play these discs for the next 2 or 3 years. So what did people do with their CDs between 1982 and 1985 then??

In fact, the first compact disc player for commercial release rolled off the assembly line in 1982 as well. It was made by Philips and the model number was was CD-100. In October 1982, Sony released their first CD player, the CD-101.

1984. I got my first CD in November of that year, but didn't get a player until a little bit later.
