At a holiday program in an elementary school in North Carolina, a physical fight broke out among the students parents after a father approached a student about pushing his daughter.

Mothers were throwing punches and shouting obsenities (it was caught on tape) and the melee went on for about ten minutes.

As adults, how does one teach their children what is and isn't socially acceptable if one cannot follow it themselves?

Barbara, this is a great question.

The answer is, they can't. However, when a child approaches an age where they are mature enough to have developed some concept of what is right and wrong, what is hurtful to others, etc, on their own, then they can rise above the example that's been set, IMO. I've seen teenagers surpass the maturity level of their parents many times. I feel sorry for these kids, who usually end up taking care of alcoholic, drug-abusing, or totally anti-social parents. It's a dern shame.

Children learn from examples (both good and bad) from other people besides their parents.

All it takes is one person the child has confidence in, to guide them in what is right and wrong and how to be tolerant. The more people around the child providing good examples for proper behavior the more likely the child will emulate them and become tolerant and respectful of others as they grow up.

Fabulous observation. Marvelous question. My answer is this. Our time has become what I like to refer to as the Me First Era. Many adults have this attitude of "me first" you don't count. Our children are watching us, as we are to be their first role models in life and their last. If we are not setting goods examples, how are they going to?
