The Archduke and his wife Sophie were assassinated in Sarajevo, Bosnia on June 28, 1914.
-It was their fourteenth wedding anniversary
-They were killed by Gavrilo Princip (a Serbian nationlaist)
-His last words were, "Sophie dear, Sophie dear, don't die! Stay alive for our children."
-They were originally attacked by a bomb, but it missed them and feel into a crowd of civilians.
-When they went to go and visit the injured in the hospital Princip saw them and shot Sophie first.
-He shot them with a Browning .380 ACP.
-Sophie died immediately b/c she was shot in the abdomen.
-Franz bled out from a shot to the throat.
-The people around him tried to help him and probably would've saved him, but they couldn't get his coat off b/c he sewed himself into it (like a corset.)

He was the crown-prince of the Austrian-Hungarian empire. He and his wife (who his parents didn't like BTW) were travelling through one of the cities.

Anyway, I think they took a wrong turn and the driver of the car they were in (an open top vehicle) went down an alley. At the end of an alley was a man who was supposed to murder the crown prince but thought he had missed his chance. So he shot both the prince and his wife, then the shooter took cyanide and killed himself.

And yes, this shooting was what started WWI

Trying to negotiate to find a truce so there woul be no more insurrectional feelings , he and wife Sophie were murdered in their car by a bomb planted by Gavrillo Princip

I believe it was in Austria, not sure which city. If I'm not mistaken his wife was also murdered. That act started World War I.
