Kid: We have to make a Pinata for Spanish Class
Mom: That sounds like fun
Kid: Yeah, I have to turn it in tomorrow
Mom: Sure you do honey. What is the joke?
Kid: Did I mention that if I don't get it turned in that I fail this semester?
Mom: Speechless.

I don't know what our mothers did before the interet. There are however no instructions on how to make a pinata in less than 24 hours and NOT make a mess.

i'm going to improvise if it HAS to be home-made.
buy at your hardware a few sq, ft. of chicken wire. shape it into a boot (or snake, whatever - you haven't time to create Rodin's "The Thinker"), and careflully wrap it in like a light cardboard box (ie, cereal box-like cardboard) hot glue or tape in place. leave the top open. reach in, push chicken wire into a ball or bend til it can be removed GENTLY!!!.
cut up newspaper in ribbons, soak in a THIN flour/water paste. make 3 or 4 small containers of the papier mache. add food dyes to each container. apply papier to boot. use a hair dryer (from a short distance so as not to blow the strips off) fashion a top and glue/tape it on and cover with papier.
clean up the mess while resisting the urge to smack the kid around for not telling you sooner.
a few rolls of decorating crepe paper are a very simple substitute.. nearly forgot!!!

My dear friend, I have had that happen so many times with other projects! I have helped my kids with written research projects, you know the ones that are only 10 pages long, which require 5 different sources of research. Believe me, that's why the hair is grey! Sometimes they used to give us a little notice at least, but sometimes they forget and time passes, and the due date is a day away! You can only hope that the frustration the parents feel is transferred to the children and that someday they will be able to draw from the experience and be better parents and citizens themselves.

I can't top the info given by the second answer.
you could also try to make one with a large inflated balloon covered in papier mache. Dry the paper strips with a hair dry and when it is dry pop the balloon, cut a small hole in it, decorate or paint the finished product. (We did this one with my daughter's Girl Scout troop)
Another idea would be to cover your SON in papier mache, dry him with the hair dryer and send him to school as his own Spanish class project, but the authorities might frown on that.
My son gave me a similar shock the week before his 10th grade science project was due that he hadn't even started it. This project is a state requirement; if not completed they fail the entire year. We grew mold on different media in record time by using an autoclave at school. He just figured he wouldn't do it and it would be "no big deal". Arrrg. Kids.

That goes along with one of my sons saying as he is going out the door to catch the school bus, "Ma, I need $80 for my soccer jacket. Today is the last day!" I say, "Sure, son, go out and pick it off the tree in the back yard!"

nicely in accordance to Newton's 0.33 regulation, I might desire to assert its the final one : The fee of the downward rigidity exerted via the guy on the chair is comparable to that exerted on him via the chair. equivalent and opposite reactions. whats sooo frikkin complicated approximately that ? anybody with consumer-friendly junior physics awareness can answer that !.. pssh . EDIT: thank you Julia sweety for noticing ! U kno how i do .. *!

My dad was creative. He would have given me a paper bag and a stick.
