It is illegal for a landlord to discriminate against an individual because they are on SSI and disability.

If it's enough to pay the rent and your bills, then they don't have a choice if you credit-qualify.

I do believe that most if not all states have housing assistance for people like yourself. The amount of rent is based on your income. Example; my next door neighbor is recieving SSI at a rate of $865 per month, his rent that he has to pay is $195 and the difference is paid by the housing authority.

Where are you located?

Some states have laws that prevent a landlord from denying to rent to a person based on their source of income.

The fact it that you have income (disability & SSI) and good credit does not make you collectable, as neither source can be garnished if you fail to pay rent or leave damages to a rental.

Also, if you have no previous landlord references and have never lived on your own, a landlord would be taking a chance by renting to you.

You may need a co-signer.

Probably the best way is call your local county. In Atlanta, you would ask for the "Housing Authority" for rental property assistance. The government calls it "Chapter 8" and is used to assist "hardship" cases on limited income or disability to acquire a place to live. They can tell you the qualifications.

Most see "Chapter 8" housing as bringing in crime, no upkeep on their premises, etc. In North Atlanta there are very nice apartments and housing in "Chapter 8". I personally live in a nice neighborhood with homes in the $350 range and we actually have neighbors in "Chapter 8". In these areas you would never know their situation because all I have seen keep their homes and apartments clean and neat.

"Chapter 8" is a government assistance program that will pay a portion of your payment monthly.

real people are more likely to take you as a tenant than faceless property management companies.

also, the social service agencies in your area may know that some landlords are more willing to rent to their clients than others.

Move to Arkansas. You can buy a place there for 30k (meaning your payments would be about 170 dollars per month.)
