fear not man. Sabean knows what it takes...he got the giants to the world series just 5 years ago. it's not his fault that the franchise has been held captive by the great homerun chase. Now that it's over you have, or rather he has, to wait for the youngsters to develop, like lincecum and lowry. the rowand signing was a great move. As a southside fan, i'm bummed that he needed that extra year. He will totally revitalize the fan base and bring real baseball excitement back to the bay. Just give sabean a year or two to recover from bonds.

The Giants are in a really tough spot right now. Without much hesitation, I can say that they're the worst team in the N.L. ahead of only the Pirates and Marlins. That isn't an insult either, it's just the truth. Bonds, the offensive catylist, is now gone. Vizquel is year older. So is Winn. I mean, the nucleus is just too old to seriously compete. I'll admit that their starting rotation is frightening with Cain, Lincecum, Zito, and Lowry as your front four, but the bullpen is still a mess. Rowand adds great defense with above average offense that should help in the short term. This team could surprise people next season, but we all saw what happened to teams without bullpens (Brewers) and teams with weak lineups (Cardinals). Just give the management time to build an offense around that rotation. Within a couple of seasons, the outlook should be much, much brighter for the Giants.

I'm not really a Giants fan but I know what they are going through. Sabean does not think that they are close to competing for a title so he is afraid to spend a lot of money or trade away prospects, like Lincecum, because they are building for the future. My favorite team is the Rangers, who are doing almost the same thing. They keep getting stop-gaps in the outfield when there was plenty of talent on the market. Last year they signed Kenny Lofton to a 1 year deal and now they passed on Rowand, Andruw Jones, and Torii Hunter in favor of signing Milton freakin Bradley. It is just very frustrating

I think he will sign some crafty veteran or two to help the bullpen. San Francisco just isn't a place people want to be right now. Zito will turn it around, as the pitching staff looks tremendous, Vizquel can hold his own on defense but he needs a solid year with the bat to make the Giants a more formidable team. Rowand will crack around 20 homeruns and I think resigning Feliz to a 2 year deal would be good. Feliz wouldn't have to worry about having a contract year next year so he might hit better because we can all see as Giants fans that his strikeouts are down but he always tried to hit for the fence...hmm maybe there is a bigger language barrier with feliz than we thought.

I think they are being patient, they are not going to make the same mistake they did last year by jumping on Zito for more money than they should have, they would rather go young and play with a "team" then go spend spend big money to have another clubhouse wrecker. Give Sabean some credit...in good time my friend all in good time!

He's a last place GM for a last place team, what do you expect? The thrill is gone, by the bay. Get ready for some lean years. Even if Cain or Lincecum end up being somebody, they will eventually price themselves out of the Giants market, because they already have a 126M pitcher in Zito.
They should have traded Lincecum and Cain for Willis and Cabrera when they had the chance....

there are some good answers here. as a fellow giants fan, i know what youre going through. its going to be tough for the next 2-3 years, thats for sure. i do think sabean knows what hes doing, hes a smart guy. his recent trades suck a lot (losing liriano, nathan, accardo etc...) but overall, his track record is pretty good as the giants GM(bringing in jeff kent, going to the WS in 02 etc...). i think sabean is just waiting, he knows that there will be a great demand for pitchers (something the giants have a ton of). i think hes waiting for the santana deal to go down so he can get a gauge of what he can get. by no means should they trade cain/lincecum, anyone else is fair game.
i think sabean has learned that he cant build a winning team through FA, but you have to win with homegrown products out of the farm system ala cleveland indians. not everyone can be like the sox and yanks and buy great players. but with bonds gone, we should have more money to spend, so hopefully we get another bat or two or bullpen help. also, i dont think sabean wants to overpay for players, like the angels and dodgers just did for the past 2 years. giving matthews 50 mill then giving hunter 90 mill. same for the dodgers giving pierre 45 mill and jones 36 mill. theyre all good players, but not worth their contract, much like zito.
we must be patient and wait for our draft picks to start playing. i cant wait for guys like alderson, bumgarner, fairley, and villalona to make it to the bigs. throw in cain and lincecum and it should be a pretty decent team for years. we had a great draft last year so we just gotta wait for them to develop.
here are some articles on our top prospects.

Just be a little more patient. I am sure he will do some more signing before spring training if the right people are found to fit in with the Giants.

There is a long way to go before spring training and the best deals are not always at the owners meetings. The Giants have the money and I believe you will see them involved in major deals before too long.
