When you give a gift that shows a lot about a person, so the better and more expensive the gift the more positive the person will think of you. For example on my birthday we made a list of what people gave me, some people gave me $50+ and others gave me $15-. Today when we look back we see how cheap and horrible the people were and those who gave a lot are still very close and are still very nice.

A gift is special when it is well chosen. When somebody takes the time to get to know me and put some serious throught into what I would really like (even if it is something that I never realized I would like). It is not so much the gift itself, or the "thought" behind it, it is the relationship behind the gift, the intimacy that allows one to know me well enough to know what I would like, that is the real gift.

Giving a gift with thought and love is always good! I remember we received expensive gifts for my son, because it was his first Christmas....but the most special gift that evening was his picture blown up in the middle of a $10 round plastic clock. What a novel and precious idea! 12 years later...it's still hanging in his room...and that clock is still ticking!

The gift is special when you realize that the person giving it to you really paid attention to what you either need or like.

I always say it's the thought that counts!
Sometimes the simple things, like making something yourself, like a warm winter blanket, has the most impact on a person, because it shows you really put your time andf effort into making the gift special.

.. I agree, its the thought behind it. For my engagement piece I didn't get a diamond .. ( since I think they are a bore anyway) I got a 24K necklace. The chain was made of tiny leaves hooked together, and the pendant is the shape of a heart, it has a star concave opening with Gods name in the middle.
He said, these are the leaves of the branches that bind us, the heart is me (him), and the star in the middle is the place god carved out for you .. thats why he left his name in the middle ...
of course what i told him is still true today, when his heart beats, the blood pumps through my veins ..
