In Lemony Snicket's "A Series of Unfortunate Events," what does the spy glass mean?

A friend and I watched the movie a few days ago and wondered what the spy glass was all about. What group where their parents in? Why did most of those people die in a fire? The movie never really answered those questions and we where wondering if the book does.

if you read the series it says so in the last book. it meant that they were in the club of fires. VFD is the mostly used letters along the story. i dont wanna give everything out. but the movie is nothing with the books. the movie only took out protions of every book and pieced a movie together. if your read the series youll see that "oloaf" kept chasing them and they had two other twins they met at a school. he was after them too. the family was all in a fire club, all the parents had kids to pass down there fortunes to. and olof was after them all. olof was an outsider he was kicked out of the club and searching for revenge. they all had a box full of disguses hence why olof knew how to "hide" ever wonder what the "eye" meant?

it also means The spyglass linked all the other guardians and the children's parents. Mr. Poe kept changing the subject b/c he did not want the children to piece together the puzzle that their parents were murdered and that the fire was not accidental

The group was VFD. I don't know that they ever found out what it stood for (the books are a very mysterious series) and the reason most of them were killed in a fire was because I think that the group fought fires or crime or something like that. I'm sorry I can't be very specific, but, the problem is, Lemony (whoever he really is) likes to be highly mysterious, and I don't think all questions really were answered in the books.
