I have well water so my electric pump runs almost constantly because the water continuously runs in the tank. I've tried the usual methods that work but I don't have the $ right now for a plumber--any ideas? Oh, and this isn't a ball it's one of those approx 3" Disc things that some toilets have instead of the ball.

Do you mean the water level rises so high, that it just keeps pouring into the overflow resevior? If so, you need to shut the water off, flush the toilet, and adjust the float down, so the tank doesn't fill so high. On yours, there is usually a plastic lock toward the bottom, and once you unlock it you can twist the plastic valve higher or lower.
If the water isn't flowing directly into the resevior, you might just need a new rubber flapper, which isn't sealing anymore.
If these don't work, you need a new filler valve, they're like $10-15.

The disc can be adjusted up or down. Just pinch the small clamp that holds it in place, and move the disc down some. If this does not work, sometimes dirt gets up into the diaphragm. You can take the top off and clean it out, but first shut off the water. The top is kind of hard to get apart, but it will come off. You may have to remove the whole unit from the toilet in order to do this. Shut off the water, flush the toilet to drain the tank, sponge out any left over water, and removed it. Take out the rubber diaphragm and rinse it off, and look inside to see if there's any thing else in it. Hard water will build up in these things and cause problems.

it could be a few things, but basicly, change the mechanics out in the tank, you can get a new float system for about $25 in most home repair stores, replace the whole stem and the flapper, in case the flap valve is leaking a little and causing the water to need to be replaced.

There is an adjustment that sets the disk up or down. You need to adjust it down (move the disk toward the bottom of the tank).-- maybe 1/2" to 1" I'm guessing.

There is some dirt on the diaphragm in the fill valve. Take it apart and clean it up.
