I have a CD-RW/DVD drive in my puter. Nothing fancy, its just what came with my Compaq last year. Well, my son put one of his games into and and it completly shattered the disk. Not broke it, shattered it into a million tiny pieces. why did this happen? Now the drive wont open. Ive tried pressing that little button (reset?) that supposed to get it open, nothing. Do I need to buy a new drive and install it? I can do that if I need to, its been awhile but Ive done it before. Or, is there another way I can coax this thing open and get all the pieces out?

You Probably Have Pieces Of CD Jammed In The Drive. Try Using The Manual Eject - The Small Hole In The Front Of The Drive, Usually On The Right. Just Below The Tray Door. Use A Straightened Paper Clip To Poke It With. If This Doesn't Work Remove The WHOLE Drive (Or Get Someone To Do It) And See If You Can Open/Clean It If All this Fails To Fix The Drive - Get A New One.

As For The Disc: ALWAYS Check Any Disc Before Using. If You See ANY Cracks In The Disc DON'T USE IT! The Drive Spins At An Incredible Speed. The Stress Of The High Speed Spinning Will Shatter A Damaged Disc. ALSO: Some Cheap Or Free Discs Are Poor Quality And May Shatter Even If You Don't See Any Damage. Older Discs Especially, Because They Were Not Designed To Spin At The Super High Speeds Of Todays Discs.

A disk can break like this if it's cracked. Disks get cracked by mishandling or pushing too hard on the center when inserting or removing the disc.

To get the door open, straighten out a paper clip (a big one if possible) and insert it into the tiny hole in the front of the drive. This releases the clutch an the door should pop open. The drive might be pooched. Make sure to remove all of the broken pieces. I have a tiny vaccuum for this but you can also use compressed air (it's sold in cans). Put a blank CD in the drive to test it. If it does not spin up or damages the surface of the CD the drive is gone--and all you've lost is a $.20 Cd. Desktop CD/DVD drives are not that expensive and easy to replace. Laptop drives are more expensive to replace.

Some of the drives have a tiny hole on the front if yours does unfold a paper clip and insert gently into the hole while there is power on the system. Even if it opens the drive is not likely to be any good. As to the disks breaking, these are made out of plastics and will warp if left in the sun ETC. Or cold.

oh the exact thing happen to me last summer, so i got a laptop instead.i don't really know why (+ i had the same computer as you, too, what a coincident!),but i think it was from overload. the drive won't open because little pieces of the cd jammed the drive , so the best thing to do is to buy a new drive. its really hard to get the pieces out though, to complicated to explain.

try taking the drive out and cleaning all of the little pieces out. one of the pieces is probably caught in the track that drives the tray out.
