what if that person openly stated that he wasn't a brit, but he just liked the accent, would that be fake?

Eh, it's more common than you probably think. If it's a decent accent, whatever. If doing something that small makes a person feel better, then I say, okay! It's not hurting anyone.

If I was British, I would take it as a compliment. It would mean that person likes the way the accent sounds.

Any accents to me are hot. Especially British accents, I don't care if they are British or not. Accents = turn-ons!

I suppose for many, the correct answer is "They are affected/ pretentious/ hoity-toity, etc."

Who cares? And it could also be the case that the individual in question grew up with a lot of British people, worked with a lot of British people, had lived abroad, etc.

My (American) boss's wife is British, and he lived in England for quite some time in the military. While he doesn't normally have an accent, he does slip into it from time to time, both purposefully and inadvertantly. I think it's funny.

I'd think they either spent time in Britain, hung around with british people or are putting it on. If it isn't one of the first two, tell them to get a life. It's stupid, making yourself out to be something else just to show off or fit in.

That they were awesome. I randomly choose accents sometimes, and will speak like it for days. One time I was the Phantom of the Opera.
