ok, i have problems connecting to my home wireless network. I know it has to do with something with the router. i usually connect to the neighbors router (idiots dont have password protection on). however, theirs is slow. we have a wireless-n router which will be much faster. my dads laptop connects just fine. so curious as what to do.

well first off serenity. I set up my network at home, it works with his laptop and not mine. I bought the router, and put the time into the research. I am 21 and am not a minor. How dare you accuse me of all these things!
and for the rest of you nice people trying to help me out.
Ill post the details of everything later. thanks

Well first you probably don't need to mind the person's comment about theft of service. It's perfectly legal in the US to connect to unprotected networks. It is not legal to break into someones secured network though.
On your question will probably need to offer much more information until someone will be able to help you. Are you able to see your network? What kind of wireless adapter does your computer have. Are you using MS Windows and if so which version? What kind of router do you have? Have you changed the router settings from the defaults? Can you currently see the wireless network (SSID) from your computer? What kind of OS does your Dad's computer have? These all could be vital in helping you as right now there are a million things it still could be.

Ok, and wireless adapter other than an 802.11a will get you on to the wireless access point. My question is if you can jump onto your neighbors WAP, and steal their bandwidth, why can you not get on your own home network??
Maybe your dad doesn't want you too and so hasn't given you the key to get on? Maybe he knows you have been up to no good and has restricted your access?
Go talk to your father, and do whatever you need to do to get back into his good graces. He pays for this service, not you, and your neighbor pays for theirs, not you, yet you seem to believe if they are "too stupid" to secure it, you have some "right" to steal from them.
I wonder if they left their front or back door open, or even a window if you would assume that they were "too stupid" leaving it open or unlocked and therefore you have some "right" to go steal from their home. It is the same thing you jack-a-napes.
Are your parents too busy earning a living to take care of raising your properly? What type of parents let their child steal from their neighbors. I wonder if you care how much damage you are doing to their relationships with the neighbors if you get caught. It shouldn't be about getting caught, you should simply not steal in the first place.
If you were my kid you wouldn't have a computer. That is a privelege, not a right, and you surely didn't pay for it, and even if you had, you are a minor and as such legally can't own anything, it belongs to your parents. I would take that computer from you, along with any other device you might enjoy, until you could earn the privelege of having the items back.
Do you do chores at home? Do you have any idea of what a family is, what it means to be part of one? Do you have any idea how many children would love to have a home and parents who love and care about them? How many kids wouldn't shame their parents as you are doing? It matters not that they don't know, you know it and so do your victims.
When did you give yourself permission to steal and act the fool to others? When did you decide it is OK to simply take what you want in life and not earn it or earn the right of the privelege? When did you decide your needs are more important than anyone elses around you? Who do you think you are to steal from your neighbors and then laugh at them in a public place, when they work and earn what they have and you simply have your hand out like people owe you something.
You are in for a rude awakening when you turn eighteen as your parents won't owe you a thing. Grow up and learn to live in a society like a decent human being instead of a slimey theif who laughs at those who work and earn what they have and don't steal or cheat others out of what they earn to get what they want. How would you like it if somebody stole from you? I bet you would be the first to scream foul play and put up a huge stink.

have u tried powering down your computer and the router, leave em off for about 10 minutes then power both back up? sometimes the computer just doesn't 'recognize' the wireless device. also, you may have it set so that it will ONLY connect to one source, i made that mistake once. don't know if your comp is set up the same as mine but try this:
go into 'My Network Places' from the start menu
click on 'View Network Connections'
click on 'Wireless Network Connection' (window should pop up)
under the 'General' tab select 'properties'
make sure your 'internet protocol (TCP/IP) box is checked
highlight 'internet protocol (TCP/IP) and click 'properties'
new window should pop up
under the 'General' tab make sure 'obtain IP address automatically' is selected and also 'obtain DNS server address automatically' is selected.
hope this helps!

Your computer should find the wireless connection of your dad.... You need to get his password to type in. Shouldnt' be that hard but bet it's looking for that router password. I have mine written on each laptop so if someone comes over with a computer, I just tell them what to type in. You might want to look up your router IP address, type it in - I believe that the logon is Admin and password is Admin and then you can SEE your key to type in.
