Because I live a middle-class, relatively easy life my thoughts on the homeless are usually limited to when I actually run across them. Which is not very often.
Actually, I'm unsure if vagabonds and hobos are the same as homeless or if it's a lifestyle choice for them.
Vagabonds and hobos have a certain romanticism to them, homeless do not.
So while I feel for anyone without the permanency and security of a home and family, I know for (at least) some of them, it is a choice.

Well, my heroes are vagabonds and hobos- Chaplin's Little Tramp, Daniel Pratt, Diogenes. I think the vagabond lifestyle is the way to go. It's my dream lifestyle: live outside the System, untouched by the evils of money, property, and respectability.
Anybody condemns vagabonds, they're just an uptight conformist.

gotta be an interesting way to live. share a beer and cigarette with them, you can hear some really great stories. One of them I met, used to be a teacher, so he claimed, and I believed him after he taught me some guitar tricks, while we sat on a bench in a park in downtown Memphis. Once I bought a few bags of chips and a 12 pack, and past them out to the "locals" and we had a pretty good time.
I did always think that just hopping a train and taking off, would be exciting. But why they do not share the same desires of a "home", like the rest of society has always puzzled me. The answer must be a key that opens a door to some deep understanding of the human dilemma.

It is on an indivisual bases, I've given money, rides, and even places to sleep while travelling from one city to another for squating.
Each one is different, one couple stayed the night, the man was ex military and cooked us a fine italian meal for dinner. Then I drove them to the next closest major mall to catch a ride through the next state.
Granted some of the street beggars are richer than the people giving them money and are too lazy to get real jobs.
If you live in a city with many of them, after a while you tend to learn who's really "sleeping" on the streets, and not just begging on them.
San fransisco is the best place for homeless folks, mostly because they're treated so well, talk to them, they're people too =P

I worked in downtown San Diego for 6 straight years and had multiple opportunities to speak with homeless people.
The reasons they are there are varied and often not their fault and often their fault. There is mental illness and the lack of care, there is physical illness that bankrupted people, there is stubbornness, there is lack of education, there is disillusionment in humanity out of various heinous acts against the individual.
There are people who reuse to deal with structure and there are those who just don't know how or why. There is alcohol and there are drugs.
Then, there are wars the USA fought that seemed to be almost intended to benefit the other side. Those veterans pulled back from the brink of victory by bureaucrats in Washington while they suffered the ravages of war, are sometimes unable to overcome the consequences. The PTSD from Vietnam and Iraq will continue to plague us with homeless vets while we shrug and point fingers.

There is usually a reason for the situation that they are in (ie mental health issues, addicts, etc) but they are people too. It's a shame that we are the richest country in the world and would rather spend billions of dollars helping the poor in other countries but cannot get our own citizens off the streets.

They are failures in the netting of a country's social system. There should be a place for them to crash, hang out a bit, then move to the next town for the next 6 week job etc.
No country has provisions for low cost housing (rental especially) for temporary labor.
Maybe you can ask for possible future solutions.

I have been in their shoes due to something completely out of my control. I feel for them. It is a hard way to live your life wondering where your next meal is coming from, etc. Our government spends millions of dollars on rediculous research for example: why do monkeys scream when they are having sex. To me the answer is obvious its cause they are enjoying themselves DUH!!! But, our government probably spent a billion doolars in research on this. They could have used the money to help the homeless people, given them a hand up.
I have always treated the homeless people with respect, and kindness.
Think about this.... No matter who we are or where we come from or how much money we have we are all 30 seconds or less away from being homeless ourselves.

Some are good people, some are not, some are to blame for their own condition, some are there as the result of the action of others.
