Emotional empowerment by yourself and others.

People often will place an "emotional attachment" on a item or even "humanize" a pet or plant to feed their own emotional attachment for such.

For example: I have cried till I became numb so many times over "stuff" , due to issues out of my control.
I have lost so many personal loved ones and possessions in "natural disasters" that I place very little personal attachment or "emotional LOVE" on any stick of furniture, or item hanging in my closet or parked in the driveway.

However, the emotional items are my real family and some family photos "memories".

I have never "humanized" animals, I was raised on a farm. Animals serve a purpose one way or another. I have pets, yet its very clear the boundaries of the emotional "attachment".

I personally find the "doggy" dress up and Christmas gift novelty a bit foolish as well. Its a sign that the owner has great difficultly with interpersonal communication with other humans and translates that to "unconditional love" of a animal. When in reality, its not. Its a neon sign of "issues" when you place animals over humans.

So whether it be an "item" or an "animal", the emotional connection YOU have valued it at, has a direct relationship to how you "feel" that loss.

Best wishes, hope you feel better.

I hope that answered your question.

You become attached to it. It also starts to feel like a person or friend to you.

When a person gets attached to something, a part of your phychology or emotion becomes part of it, metaphorically speaking.
