Germany was always independent. They were never ruled by anyone. East Germany was heavily influenced by the USSR until 1990, when the Berlin wall fell. However, West Germany was also heavily influenced by the Americans, British, and French. Germany re-unified in 1990. Germany wasn't always a unified country before World War II either. Germany didn't become "Germany" until Chancellor Otto von Bismarck unified the German states under the King of Prussia. Thus creating the German "empire." With the King of Prussia being the new Kaiser of Germany.

Hope this helped.

The British, French and American occupation zones, set up at the end of World War II, merged into the Federal Republic of Germany (West Germany) in 1949 and became independent when the occupation ended in 1955. The Russian occupation zone became the Democratic Republic of Germany (East Germany) and remained under some degree of Soviet control until East and West Germany were reunited in 1990.

It is possible you mean: When did the 15 independent kingdoms and principalities of Germany become unified into one German empire? The year was 1871, on the occasion of the victory of the kingdom of Prussia over France in the Franco-Prussian War. The Prussian chancellor (prime minister) Otto von Bismarck orchestrated the war to have king William IV of Prussia declared Kaiser (emperor) of a united Germany in the Hall of Mirrors at the royal palace at Versailles.

Prior to that, Napoleon Bonaparte conquered all of the 300 independent German states of his time (1800-1815) and consolidated them into the 15 that survived until 1871.

Geramny unified in about 1871, before that it was a group of states, Prussia being the biggest and most powerful. Otto von Bismarck was the guy who led the unification after the defeat of France in the Franco-Prussian War but it didn't really become independent
