Young women today must be taught street smarts in my opinion.

Girls need to learn:

1. Never, ever leave your drink unattended. Finish it before you go dance or whatever.
2. Never, ever get in a car with a guy you don’t know. I don’t care how much coke he has.
3. Never, ever get so blasted drunk in public that you can’t take care of yourself. Lindsey Lohan and all those rich celebutantes are lucky they didn’t get raped or killed, and that they didn’t kill anyone while they were driving drunk.
4. Parents should send their kids on these vacations with a chaperone. My mother went with my girlfriends and me to Florida when we took our senior trip.

This advice goes for men and women. Things happen to men, too.

I easily have tried to maintain up with the case and that i did watch the teach the place he confessed. i know after the teach aired he instructed definitely everyone that he became into merely playing innovations video games with the guy he confessed to. i think of he somewhat did do it and that's ashamed that he's getting away with it. His father is a choose and he has an extremely good criminal expert from what I comprehend. possibly sometime they're going to discover some information to convict him. final I heard Joran became into residing in Thailand and became into suspected to be in touch in human trafficking crimes.

More than likely, Natalee was GHB'd and really wasn't in control of much that night. I believe that the combination of GHB and alcohol caused her death. Even if she thought she was not drinking enough to be drunk. (I personally don't believe she was drunk beyond the point of making good decisions), the GHB however would have taken away ALL choice in the matter. What really saddens me is that her friends who went to the bar with her basically abandoned her to her fate. With street smarts, you watch each other's drink. You all don't go dancing and return to glasses left unattended. When you go someplace out of the ordinary... whether here in the USA but especially when abroad.... YOU GO AS A GROUP, YOU RETURN AS A GROUP!!!! You don't go swimming in the ocean alone either. This is just common sense (street smarts).

I think her death was a tragic result of unintended events, but unintended events kill equally as intended events. They were not trying to kill her but they were trying to rape her. That is despicable enough all by itself. Just the same the consequences of her death were a direct result of their actions and they should be punished for it severely. Manslaughter should have the minimum Joran Vandersloot should have had done to him. Whatever he should have had as a punishment, it still won't bring Natalee back. Equally important, her friends using common sense ALSO could have avoided this. Joran will have to live with his own conscious for the rest of his life...so will her friends or school mates that went back to their hotel without her that night.

Laws are different in the countries you visit. Go prepared, have a plan, stick together, and stay safe!!!! This not only applies to young women, it applies to all who find themselves in unfamiliar territory. This doesn't excuse those who intentionally do harm to others for their actions, I am saying it should be a wake-up call for the buddy system to not drop your guard. Look out for your friend's best interest or live with the consequences of your behavior as well. It will haunt you for a long time not doing the right thing.

The asker of this question was asking about street smarts and the role it plays in consequences. I tried to focus on this issue. I just see it that the street smarts issue belonged to the whole group that night, not just Natalee...especially if she was drugged into submission.

There are lots of things girls should do to keep themselves safe. But if someone wants them they will get them unless someone stops them. I worked security for the miss teenage America pageant several years back. We had to watch these girls like hawks, they would try to sneak out of their rooms at night to meet boys and men they did not know. We had to deal with guys and some girls trying to get their hands on the contestants. We did not allow it to happen. Trips in or especially out of this country should hire Private security. That is the only way these girls can be safe.

Was it her fault? No. I don't blame her. But I see where she should/could have been more careful and it is certainly a lesson for other young women.

Don't leave your drink unattended or attended by someone you don't know.
Don't leave with someone you don't know. Go with a group or friend and stay with that group/friend.
Don't get so drunk that you don't know what you are doing, especially if there is no one around who you trust with your life.

I've been drunk (who hasn't), I've seen my friends drunk. We always took care of one another. I don't leave without my friend(s), my friend(s) doesn't leave without me. Period.

These should be more important when you are in an unfamiliar place with no one to realize immediately if you are gone (like on spring break).

Don't get drunk while visiting a foreign country and stay away from "Booze Cruises" that cater to young people who are still not legally old enough to drink in their own country. Notice how you never see older adults going on them? Also, don't go off with strangers and accept a ride with them.

So sad.

Of course the down and dirty is don't leave the group, don't go off w/ men you don't know, etc.
but its also true no one should have to die for a dumb move.

Still they do.

Guard your kids with your life.

I was a teenager 25 years ago and WE knew not to ever trust men you don't know - why are there still girls who are so naive?
I don't know if there is anything new to be learned - this kind of thing has ALWAYS happened to young women, and will always happen as we cannot be guaranteed to be safe when we are out and about.

Don't go getting drunk in a foreign country and accept rides from strange men.

Ok, why did I get a thumbs down for this? That is a lesson everyone should learn! If she wouldn't have been so damn drunk she didn't know what she was doing or who she was leaving with she would most probably be alive today.

There's safety in numbers, don't leave with a dude you don't know, don't go anywhere by yourself in a foreign country, and always carry a tazer/pepper spray.
