Zach wrote the formula w(w – 1)(6w + 2) for the volume of a rectangular prism he is designing, with width w, which is always has a positive value greater than 1. Find the product and then classify this polynomial by degree and by number of terms.

a. 6w^3 - 4w^2 -2w ; cubic trinomial
b. 6w^4 - 4w^3 - 2w^2 ; quartic trinomial
c. 12w^2; quadratic monomial
d. 6w^5 - 4w^4 - 2w^3 ; quintic trinomial

Use FOIL to expand the two binomials:

=w(6w² + 2w - 6w - 2)
=w(6w² - 4w - 2)

Now multiply the trinomial by w:

=6w^3 - 4w² - 2w

There are three terms, and the highest degree is 3, so this is a cubic trinomial.

Answer a is correct.
