there was a knock at my door just a few minutes ago, they were knocking for about 5 - 10 minutes
i hate hearing knocks like that, so i dont answer it especially at 18:30pm, who would be knocking for that long at this hour
do you ever avoid knocks like this

Of course you should answer your door!
If someone was going to attack or murder you, firstly they wouldn't knock on the door, and secondly they wouldn't knock so loud to scare you! They would knock quietly so you would answer the door without any worries!
Theres no need to be scared, all this stress about being attacked in your home is mainly media driven - statistically it is not very likely at all. Its December 20th, it sounds like someone has just got home from work and is trying to give you your Christmas Card!
P.S. if someone was calling for you, and you ignored the door - they would see your lights on and think you didn't hear them - so they would knock louder anyway!

Sorry you live in an area where you feel so threatened. In this day and age can you get someone to rig up a video camera to cover your door.
Unfortunately you are likely to get everyone from police to postman calling. If you have your own gateway you could put locks on the gates, that way if someone then knocks on the door you KNOW they are there illegally and therefore you can call the police with "locked property, intruder on"!!
Still thinking about it the UK police would only send you a card with a crime number on!!!

When I get any kind of knock, I go to my window and see who it is before I even consider opening the door.

I don't care what kind of a knock it is, if I'm not expecting someone, I don't answer my door.

Not home alone, however, at that late hour the knocks would go unanswered unless we knew who was knocking.

I do. I check from the top window secretly and if I recognise the person I'll go down. or if I am downstairs and the corridor doors open I slowly and quietly go to the frontdoor and look through the little spy hole.

i never heard of 18:30 but i assume it must be late umm yea i dont answer my door at all because alot of sales people knock and i donnt have any money so...=]

Its only six thirty, its not late. If someone knocks at my door I answer it.

Never have but I agree with you I wouldnt answer it either especially if you were home alone. The only thing is what if it was an er? Except they could call you?
