Biologically, it would probably be another primate like the chimpanzee. They have relatively advanced brains, walk upright, and have the opposing thumb, along with a relatively robust physiology. If you consider man to differ from the other animals primarily by a non-material soul or spirit, then the next dominant species would be whichever one God grants dominion over the earth. But that's outside the realm of science.

If ALL of mankind was wiped out, then probably all the land animals that we know would, eventally, go with us, therefore possibly it would have to be an animal from the sea, and possibly out of those, the ones that currently can live both in the sea and on the land are the ones most likely to take over the land ( at least initially).
I don't think the Dolphins would be able to adapt quickly enough, so I'd go for - CRABS.

I think it would depend on the country and locations because a city would break down and decay differently than a forest. Different plants, animals and insects would take over in each location. You probably wouldn't find a lion to be "King of the jungle" in a city, unless it escaped from the zoo. I think the plants and bugs would take over because the animals can't build things to protect themselves from that environment, so eventually they would probably die too. It's kind of hard to imagine. Good question.

The insect family, particularly cockroaches which are probably the hardiest and most adaptable. They can even withstand high levels of deadly radiation.

Read the book, World Without Us. It tells what would happen if humans were erased from the planet.
