I have a painted turtle, she is about the size of a baseball. We have tried to find someone to come to the house and take care of her and my lizards, but it's hard to find a reliable person that we trust to come over and who is not going away for Christmas, so now we have to take her and my lizards with us to Tennessee which is an 8 hour drive for us. How do I travel with my turtle, we have never taken her anywhere.

Just transport your turtle the same way you would the lizards. All you need is a "travel tote" without any water while you're traveling. Place a chemical heat pack inside the tote under a towel (these things still get about 110F)...OR...you can get an A/C adapter you can plug into the lighter spot in your car. This is what I use. I plug a human heating pad into it.

You're turtle maybe a little stressed during the trip, but you will know she is getting the best care you can give her. Once you get to your destination you can fill it with some water and a basking rock and place a heat lamp over her. Your guys can go a several weeks with no ill effects of not having any UVB - but the lack of heat could be detrimental to their health. Just make sure you have the heat bulbs and replace the UVB as soon as you get home...:-)

Keep in mind chelonia are illegal to own in the state of TN - so just be aware that you might get asked about her and all you have to do is tell the truth - you're visiting from out of state. They WILL NOT confiscate your turtle. You may never get asked - but you are prepared in case wildlife people spot her for some bazaar reason. I live in TN and just got all the TWRA laws concerning them a few weeks ago.

Yes, your vet may watch them for about 10 bucks a day, sometimes a pet shop will too, but you cant really trust them to take good care of your beloved pets.

I traveled 15 hours with over 40 herps when I moved from colorado to illinois. They will be fine. Use plastic containers, the ones that you find at walmart, the clear ones with lids. Drill holes into the sides for air and they will all be just fine. Keep the turtle on moist paper towel, not in water.

Good luck!

Talk to the airline. You might be able to carry them in a small styrofoam box lined with a wet towel. There will probably be a fee, though. You do NOT want to carry them in a bowl of water, nor do you want to keep the turtles in a small bowl when you get them home. Do you have any idea how big those "mini" turtles can get?

Check with the Vet for boarding places. Sometimes the Vets board animals for low prices.
