It's very difficult to tell unless you have several the same species and age. (Bit like most fish)
The females are usually plumper and slightly larger than the males.
I usually just find another of the same species and put them together, if they ignore each other they are both female, if they fight they are males, and if one climbs onto the back of the other that is male the other is a female. Mating in captivity is very rare and they don't make good parents! Once the gravels (baby rocks)arrive both parents leave them to fend for themselves.

Look for signs of small fires around your house. A male pet rock's stones would clank together as it moved and spark fires.

Good question! If it's hard and sits in front of the t.v. it's a male.If it's a soft rock (feldspar,soapstone,etc.) it's a female.

if it's a marble texture it's a girl
and a boy rock is a gannet texture

well just simply look on the underside of the rock.
if it has a penis, its a male.
if it has a vagina, its a female.

well, if it sports a penis then Id guess you could give it a 'male' title, if there isnt one of those and its just a hole, Id suggest 'female' and if there is nothing, which would be weird...then Id title it...'it' or maybe hermafrodite....?
