im doing pretty great on my bills but my dad says anytime i have a little extra at the end of the month it should go towards debt. He's the type of person who pays his bills weeks before they are due...

its a bonus. its extra cash, so you should have had arrangments to cover your bills before your bonus, so therefore use it all on yourself. Of course you could have been counting on that bonus when you ran up your bills, so then you'd have to use it on bills.

If I were to get a bonus, it would go to bills. That IS spending on me - and continues to give throughout the year when I don't have to put as much of my pay check towards my debt.

I usually do the split - I put 1/3 to bills, 1/3 to savings (because that's always important) and then I spend the other 1/3 on myself. (Actually, this year I just took the first $100 for myself and then split the rest -- I got a really good one this year!)

I got my first ever bonus this year too. I was gonna be responsible with it and save 1/2 and do a small home improvement project with the other half. BUT. . .my washing machine conveniently died before I could do anything. Guess where my money went?!? It's like your car, appliances, anything expensive, etc. KNOW when you get a little ahead financially and ruin it for you!

Reward yourself with a small portion of the money (about 1/3), but be more responsible with the larger part. Besides, paying against a debt is, in a way, doing something for yourself.

It's really up to you! it's your bonus! I think personally I would buy a little something of myself [heck you earned it!] then also pay on some bills! that way you have both covered :)

Enjoy shopping!

I would advise to devote some of your bonus to bills and reward yourself with a gift.

I do half and half with mine-I always shop early so I don't need it all for gifts. I use it to pay things like car tags, pay a little extra at day care, etc

Well, it all depends on your situation.
As for me, the very first xmas bonus I got was for nice things I wanted.
This year? Paying bills!
A completely different situation.

the right thing is to always pay bills....if your bills are paid then any money you have can be spent on you....it works out both ways, where as if you spend it on yourself ...then you still have to pay bills
