"WHATEVER" - it shows a total lack of respect for another person's opinion and is rude and crass.

I have called out people on this and they say it doesn't really mean much - unless you say it to them.

"Whatever" is a put down as much as anything else may be and shows the person saying it is such a shallow thinker that they can not logically discuss a topic and so "jump out" of the conversation with their flippant reply.

When they finally burn their last bridge and have no friends left, they may realize what they have said and done. Only smart people know that "whatever" is demeaning and hurtful.

I give you permission to do "WHATEVER" it takes to get these people out of your life. (HE HE HE)

I end up being REAL snarky with them, because that is one of my BIGGEST pet peeves! Especially when them promiscuous teens be on Maury, they come on stage saying "whatever, whatever!"

But the word DOES show a person's intelligence, though... It's used when someone does not have an intellectual defense to a criticism aimed at them.

I find it a snotty response. It is basically a clean way of someone saying "I don't care" or F*$* you" in my opinion. Can't stand it. I bite my tongue and think "what a disrespectful little brat"...
