I don't think we all as people use it for the same reasons. I think it is a little bit of both for all of us. However, I feel that I say it because I find myself in situations that i want so badly to control and realize it happens for the best and that there was really nothing i could do but deal with it. You can't really determine any ones motives for that particular quote however all that should matter is how you use it and if it really does anything for you. I honestly believe things do happen for a reason and although we may not agree or completely understand that reason, we have to live with it and find a way to make it positive and move forward.

I say this becuse, if one thing didn't happen then maybe this wouldn't have happened. I feel like whatever you do, effects something you do later. Thats how I look at Things happen for a reason. I also say this because why else would things happen? There might be some reason around a certain thing happening? Some reason.

nop

things happens for a reason its the truth.
if you suffer today there is a reason for that its a sin you commited in this life or in a past life the consequence is un avoidable , the good and bad you do and done(your karma) follows you behind until the end of your soul. by attaining nirvana.
why there are handi cap people why theres blind people ?
why there are diseased people ?
those are the consequence for their past life sins.
your have to pay them by suffering thats the rules of this universe.
all you grow is all you harvest
your sins and merit is all you take when you die. nothing else
if you got no idea what im talking about look in to buddhism in wikipedia.
and if u really like to discover some experience of blind handicap people( the reasons for them being blind handicap)

Depends where on the chain you locate 'things'.
It could be at the bottom of the rung, as in this quanta jumped to the next level for a reason. Or it can be at the opposite end, as in the universe has a meaning, or my life at its end has a meaning.
Depends on what you mean by 'reason'. Do you mean 'cause and effect' material-cause. Or do you mean 'final cause'.

Know what I think. I think people that criticize that thought ususally have a babyish simplistic idea of what it means.

I would say neither; many people are fatalists (what will happen will happen) and many people subscribe to the "theory" that "what goes around comes around".
Sometimes the people who say such things should use their manner; when my youngest son died, it did not make me feel better, but I felt sorry for the speakers, as they obviously did not "have any upbringing".
