My engagement ring was my wedding ring. It's a Claddagh (traditional Irish wedding ring), so when we got married I just took it off, gave it to the best man, and my husband gave it back to me during the ceremony. You can pretty much do anything you want to.

Traditionally, the man buys his fiancé and engagement ring and presents it at the time he proposes marriage. Later, the two of you buy your wedding rings. So the woman will end up with two rings, the man with just one. Often women's engagement and wedding rings are bough as a set, so she can wear the engagement ring by itself until she gets married, and then the wedding band is fitted on top of it.

There are so many ways to do this, it is mainly up to you and your significant other. I received a "promise" ring in high school. After college, an engagement ring. I loved the engagement ring so much I didn't want to get a new one so we had bands made to match it.
Do what you want, and can afford -- have fun and enjoy!

You use the engagement ring. The wedding BAND is what's added at the ceremony. The two rings are worn together. If it's a double-ring ceremony, the groom also has a band.

You buy wedding bands. Some couples opt just for one for the woman. Others decide they want a double ring ceremony and both people exchange rings.

It's up to you. I will be using my engagement ring and buying a wrap for it because I love it.

If you don't know this, you are too young to be getting married.
