It is our capacity as human beings to THINK and critically evaluate before we ACT, that makes us unique as a species. This also comes with great responsibility. Although some would love to blame behavior on fictional excuses (calling it "automatic" or "out of their control"), the bottom line, in MANY cases, is that our behavior (i.e., our response) is, most definitely , within our control. The "control" piece is in the "space" you referenced above...between the stimulus and the response.

The power of choice is very powerful indeed. The "choice" resides in that metaphorical space between stimulus and response.

Well done Michele, I agree. Effectively, life is a succession of Stimuli (S) and Responses (R) and we are where we are today because of these S&R successions.

The sad thing is many people do not use the space between S&R effectively. If one learns to make use of that space, one can achieve better control and aim for accurate responses. Ultimately, the use of the space will lead you to better control, better choices, better achievements and you will reach your full potential and have full control of your life. You can set very high goals and reach them. As human we have amazing capacities that are not used properly because we do not use that space.

Personally, to make better decisions, I often use the "do nothing principle" to have more time to think before I act.

Excellent Question!!

Good essay question. Between stimulus and response, there is space means that we are not automatons: rather, we have an ability to make choices instead of just responding.

There is space.. and time.. in the way that light/touch/taste/whatever has to travel to us, to our sensory/nerves, be processed, sent to the brain as an electrical impulse, processed into usable information and the appropriate response sent back down the chain to the appropriate parts of the body.

Lots of space covered.. over a very short period of time.
