Does it not seem racist to hire someone or accept someone into your school on the basis of race and not qualifications? I will agree that there are plenty of racist CEO's out there that would never hire a minority unless they are forced to, but why would a minority even want to work for someone like that to begin with. Why not work for someone that chose you based on what you can do. Sure, most schools and companies have a higher rate of white people, but what we need to realize is that there are more white people in the US than any other nationality so of course, in general, most places are going to have more whites. Doesn't affirmitive action keep minorities from doing the best that they can for themselves? I mean, if I was still in highschool and knew that I was going to get accepted in college cause I was a minority, then I probably would not try as hard to get good grades. Why is that fair that some people got to work thier butts off to get somewhere and others do not?

I personally think that people need to get off the damn color issue. I agree that a person should get a job or into a school because of the hard work they have done to get to that point. I think that Affirmative Action can be racist. And seriously it's 2007. Can we just move on.

Yes it is. I understand the thinking behind it. Statistically, other races aren't represented in college and the workplace like whites are and they're trying to even that out a little. It's just not fair to the person who loses their spot to the minority candidate. For me personally, I'd like to accomplish whatever I accomplish on my own merits, but when you're trying to get into school or need a job, I doubt I'd turn it down.

I think that affirmative action is a quick fix for something that needs to be fixed at the root (family, education, and social expectations.) I dated a girl one time who was from a really upperclass family (I'm from a very poor family.) The thing that made the biggest impression on me was that the question that her and her friends had to answer was whether they were going to be a doctor or a lawyer whereas with me and my friends the question was whether to go to college or not. College was a given to them. I've tried to adopt that mindset and to think beyond where I started. I think a lot of minorities may be in the same mindset. From the start, they're taught to be poor and not to acheive or only to acheive to a certain level.

Yes, anytime ethnic group is a major factor in decision making it is racist.

I think that the government should only get involved in employment decisions if the person who was not hired can prove they are significantly more qualified than the person that was. It shouldn't matter their color. A white male in the current state of affairs has no recourse if he is not hired because of affirmative action.

I don't think those who are motivated work less because of affirmative action though. They will work just as hard if only to get a better position.

I am a very firm believer that the best qualified person for the job should get it. Affirmative action is BS, if we have to follow it in the work area then why not in sports. Why not because the best athlete gets the spot!

Affirmative Action is by definition racist. It prioritizes a person's race, and denigrates the inherent value of the individual. This is precisely why racism is morally wrong.
However, these programs send exactly the wrong message about prejudice. Instead of showing that racism is wrong and should be abolished, they are saying that racism is so good, we want some too.

I agree with you. I believe that race shouldn't be a factor in hiring someone one way or the other.

affirmative action is white men's way of saying "We know you can't earn it on your own, but just to show you how nice we are, you can have it anyway." It is racism (and sexism) in its most condescending form.
