"One Hundred Years of Solitude" by Gabriel Garcia Marquez always tops my list. Another favorite by him is "Chronicle of a Death Foretold."

"All the Pretty Horses" by Cormac McCarthy, an award winner and a great story. I have yet to read more by him, but will when I can.

"Teacher Man" by Frank McCourt... the same that got the Pulitzer for "Angela's Ashes," but I like this book more. It's open, funny, poignant; all about Mr. McCourt's years spent learning to teach high school English at various schools in New York City.

"The Glass Castle" by Jeanette Walls; another autobiography with a good hook and a good story to follow.

"Reservation Blues" and "The Toughest Indian in the World" by Sherman Alexie; kind of self-explanatory titles, in a 'roundabout way. The second book is one of short stories.

Oh, and the books that include animals:

"Winterdance" by Gary Paulsen, a true story of his preparation for and running of the Iditarod: 1180 mile sled-dog race in Alaska. Good winter reading by the fire. Magic moments and well-written.

"Seabiscuit: An American Legend" by Laura Hillenbrand. You think you know a story until you meet it again, very well researched and well-written by a woman who knew what she was doing... a story of much more than the horse; of an era.

Happy holidays--

My favorite two book series are the Miles Vorkosigan books by Lois McMaster Bujold (the first one is The Warrior's Apprentice) and the Twilight series by Stephenie Meyer (first book is Twilight). The Bujolds are science fiction and the Meyers are young adult, but even if you don't normally read those genres I think you would enjoy these because they're just so good. Give them a try!

"Ibn al-Haytham: First Scientist" by Bradley Steffens tells the inspiring, true story of a medieval Muslim scholar who overcame bouts of mental illness to develop the scientific method two hundred years before the Europeans learned of it--by reading his books. You can find reviews of the book and read a sample chapter at http://www.ibnalhaytham.net/

I really love the Douglas Preston/Lincoln Child books, especially the ones with Agent Pendergast. Try 'Relic' and 'The Cabinet of Curiosities'.
Also, Stephen King is one of my favorites.
And if you haven't already, you might try 'Red Dragon', 'The Silence of the Lambs', and 'Hannibal' by Thomas Harris. 'Hannibal Rising' isn't that great.
Books are awesome, aren't they?
