The mane looks kinda like a crown.
They actually have a matriarchal society and you usually see the alpha of the pride sitting on a rock being lazy, kinda like a king sitting on a throne.
In the pride, he gets what he wants before anyone else gets it.
The only time he has to fight is to ward off other male lions trying to take his role.

Because the lion has something no other animal has....A large mane. It represents the king's crown.
Lions live in prides so they have a heirachy and the dominant male is treated as a king
Also Lions have no predators and can EASILY defeat any other predator in its habitat.
Also Lions are very powerful animals and are the best fighters in the animal kingdom. This represents its power
However in some parts of asia like India and Bangladesh the Tiger is considered the king. Because their have become notorious and strike fear in he citizens hearts. Also In parts of America, even jaguars have been called the king, so it depends where u r from and how u experience the animal either strokin it or watchin it kill large prey.
Snakes and crocs don't have the characteristics of the lion, which are charactristics of a king. Also Lions will probably defeat crocs and snakes in fights aswell

The origin comes from observations of prides at watering holes. First, all other animals give way to lions when they come to drink, except the elephants. Second, a pride of lions has a very distinct social structure, where females hunt, but males take first pick. Males also do not tolerate other males near them (territorial).
Let's also not forget that some of the first white explorers of africa were English and/or from other European countries that had monarchies or at least a history of them.

The tiger is considered the king of the jungle in the eastern world and he can't have the position in the west as well, so the lion won de facto.

They held the elections sometime back, and the Lion keeps winning. Perhaps because he threatens to eat any of the other animals that won't vote for him for king.

Walt Disney has influenced many ideas about animals.
The worst for children is that to calm a wild beast one just has to show it kindness and love. This leads people at the zoo to try to get next to a wild animal and show it lots of love resulting in having a leg or arm pulled through the bars and damaged.
All animal stories have to have an animal in distress from nature(fire) another animal, humans mistreating it which tugs at human heartstrings.
Watch a baby animal torn to shreds and eaten alive by the so called King of the Beasts and you will know the true nature of the wild kingdom.

It has no predators, and it looks cool.
Don't know why it is the "king of the JUNGLE" specifically though.
I thought it was "King of Beasts"
