Friend,
Not all poor happy. You can not generalise that all poor are happy.
Similarly all affluent or rich people are not happy.Riches or money may provide physical pleasure and comforts. But happiness is different.
There are happy , very happy persons in poor and there are very sad and worried people in rich.
The poor have nothing to loose and get good sleep and happily slip into sleep provided they are not greedy on envious about the rich.
The rich have to guard so many things and their minds are fully occupied with material matter and in majority cases they live a tension filed life. Not all please.
So there are happy people and sad or worried people in both groups.
One has to first understand the difference between pleasure and happiness. Then they see the point.
That is my personal opinion .

Happiness comes from peace of mind and satisfaction.
Sometimes a very poor person is happier than a rich person because he is satisfied with whatever he is getting or whatever he does for that, and if you don't have to think about things that brings u tension or disturbs your mental peace then you are really a happy person. Many rich people are not happy because they don't have mental peace (may be due to their work load) or they do not have any limit to there dreams.
Thus a self-contained human being is more happier, no matter if he is poor or rich.

I'm not sure they are. I was reading a summary of some research saying that the poor are have more fears about the world (understandably so) than do the rich. The poor certainly have poorer health than the rich because they can't afford good health care like the wealthy can. If you are in poor health, how happy can you be? Especially when you get the bill for your medications!

There was one king , he was very much unhappy and always tensed. once a saint came to his court , the king asked him for the solution of his problem. that saint told him that if you can get a Kurta (shirt ) of a person who is always happy and wear that kurta you will become happy. King sent men for the search of the happy man , for many days they could not find anybody. one day the King went for hunting, near the jungle on the edge of his Kingdom he met one farmer he looked very happy and calm so the king asked him " are you always like this? " that farmer smiled and said " yes " the King immediately asked him then in that case you are going to earn lot of money I will buy one of your kurta at any cost , the farmer replied " I don't have any Kurta " the king was surprised to know that this farmer who is claiming that he is always happy , does not have enough cloths to wear. he asked him the secret of his Happiness . the Farmer said " Contentment ‚ or ‚ Satisfaction , I am happy because whatever I have is enough for me I don't want more than what god has given me and if I need anything more than this, I have faith that god will provide me without me asking him he takes care of me so I don't have to worry"
the King immediately went to the saint and told him that " I have learnt the lesson and that is CONTENTMENT.
My grand mother told me this story when I was small.
The happiness or unhappiness both are the feeling experienced by the mana (mind) so it doesn't matter if you are rich or poor but what matters is how contented you are.

I don't think you are because you are rich or poor. There are happy rich people and happy poor people. The difference is you just have different problems. There was a really good documentary on BBC World awhile back about happiness. It was facinating. I bet you could buy a DVD copy on their wesite.

As you get richer it takes more to make you happy. You won't treasure material gifts as much as before.
But that doesn't mean the poor are happier. This is obvious from the social problems that usually arise from the city slums. Perhaps the happiest people are those with middle income who live in the countryside who don't rely on material success to determine their happiness.

Oh! thanks for that 'additional' details. Answering becomes a bit easier.
The 'key' is to consciously keep the 'richness' inside the pocket, wallet, purse, bank account or anywhere else except inside our head!
Even the poor who keep it in head lose their happiness. Also, some rich, who keep it outside their head, not only are happy, but also manage it better (the head is now more cool, to think intelligently!).

i think the rich are happier. but then again if your going to be depressed and stuff it doesnt really matter if you could buy the world or if you cant buy dinner. but the poor face financial problems, the rich could give to the poor. but when the rich are out making the money they really miss out on life like later on they may regret a lot of stuff that they didnt get to do. also they have to make big decisions like to make more money or be with family. my parents killed theirselves on wall street my mom when she was 20-30 at salomon brothers and dean witter then she had me when she was 35 and when i was 2 she was offered a large sum of money to go ack to salomon but she didnt go bc she thought it was more important to watch me grow up then to be with a nanny.

happyness is the state of mind... any one in this world will get happy mood and enjoy the happiness with available means and facility....
poor not caring any other thing or he forgetting other things and we are observing as happier than rich...
rich also mor happer than poor those who are honestly earned and reached more richest level without affection other people and enjoying their life with every one by sharing some thing to needy...
actually sharing happiness with others.. doubles their happy state of mind and for long time...
some riches unable to reach the most happeiest person in the society because of their current situation and want of money, time for their continued business and money making desires to retain their position in the richer society...
those who are not bothering the comments and not limiting them with rich society... and realising beyond the status and level of wealthyness.. happiness is different from all other... it is a enjoyment in our life with close life partner, friends and so on...
feeling like happiest person, most succesful are the state of mind only... we should not compare or measure with physical kind of money or wealth...
some one will get happy by the following reasons:
*by helping others...
*giving some thing to some one..
*sharing love and affection
*by earning money and wealth
*forgetting the worries
*accepting the limitations
*instead of worrying what we are unable to get accepting what we got and enjoying the life
i feel,
*happy is not available some where it is available within you
*happyness no one will give you ..it is in your hand you have to take it
*it is your life you have to enjoy and make it happy and enoy
*no one in this world prevant you to be happy
*you won't get happiness unless you stop worrying or trying to get more and endless desires

Money brings alot of superficial companions.I would not say that the poor are actually happier, but when you kacl finances in abundance you learn how to enjoy the best things of life, which is free.Money is nice, but you notice how phony people are when you have it,and how fast they can forget you when it disappears.
