What do you do to him when he does this? If you do nothing and take it he will continue to mouth off. If he is punished he will stop. Take away his privileges if he does it. They learn very quickly to stop when they have to sit in their room and do nothing. When mine are sent to their rooms for anything they are only allowed to read. No music, TV, telephone or anything. The telephone and the computer is what kills them. You have to prove that you mean business. Do not threaten, do it.

Check what has happened recently that would cause such a major shift (school and friends are generally the more likely culprits). As others have stated, he's entering puberty which causes all kinds of strange reactions with hormones, emotions and concerns about physical development. He needs to understand these are "normal" and he'll be a better adult if he navigates them with respect for himself and others.
He may have strong desires for independence although he's still insecure on how to obtain it or hold onto it once he gets it. It's a pretty confusing adventure for both of you.
Remember the number one job of adolescents is to "know who they are and where they fit in the world". Given today's influences, this isn't a simple task.
He appears to need boundaries however. Simple consequences for mouthing off may be best. Show respect to get respect and be treated as an adult.

Oh man....
First of all try to bring yourself back to when you were that age. What would cause you to act out?
Frustration, perhaps?

Try to find out what is bothering him. Could be school or home related.... or maybe just trying to find some ways of Independence. I know at that age that is what I wanted, and it frustrated me to have an adult trying to "tell me what to do."
But we both know as adults.... that this is the period where adolescents need the most parenting, and us as parents need to be more crafty with our techniques.

Remember your son is entering into the age bracket where
sex
puberty
girls
experimentation with drugs & drinking
.... and what have you come into play.
Kids nowadays are intoduced to these forms of debauchery at a much earlier age then we were. Scary isn't it?

Best of Luck!
