The RUF and their political wing, the RUFP, have wanted to control the diamond trade. When they have had power they have only been interested in enriching themselves.
The documentary The "Empire in Africa" did argue that RUF fought for the liberation of Sierra Leone and did not cause more abuse than the government and western armies.
