Adding more RAM will make almost any computer run faster. There's more temporary storage available. However 32 bit operating system's cannot read more than 4GB of RAM.

Depending what OS and what software you're running, it may not be.

For a regular email-and-internet computer user with Windows Vista, 1 gigabyte is enough, and 2 GB is MORE than enough. In XP, 1 GB is more than enough.

It's only when you start doing things like playing the latest games that more than 2 GB is handy. And it's only when you're doing heavy-duty graphics or video editing that more RAM is ALWAYS better.

Basically, the more RAM you have, the more programs you can run at once, and the more those programs can do at one time.

Imagine you're trying to put together a jigsaw puzzle. The puzzle is 6 feet by 8 feet. You have a table that is 3 feet by 4 feet...and the floor is shag carpeting so you can't really assemble the puzzle down there, but you can set it aside there. You have to pick up and take down sections of the puzzle from the floor as you need them or as your run out of room on the table, because it can't hold the whole thing.

Well, the table is your RAM. The floor is your hard disk. If you're working with programs or data that are bigger than your table, or which require more room to work than your table provides, you have to set aside parts on the floor. This takes time and is a pain in the ***.

That is why more RAM can be better.

But if all you're doing on that table is eating lunch or paying your bills, you don't need the extra room. (And more RAM uses more power, makes more heat, and costs more money, so if you don't need it, don't buy it.)

RAM stands for Random Access Memory - it's the workspace that your computer uses for whatever job it's working on at the moment. Think of it as scratch paper.

If your computer runs out of RAM, it writes the temp. files to the hard drive, and then reuses that space in RAM for the next job. When it comes back to the first task, it reads the temp. file from the disk again. That process of writing to the hard drive and reading it back is slow compared to reading it from RAM. Having more RAM means it can keep more data in the fast access memory and save you that extra time. It's like having a bunch of blank paper laying out on your desk to jot notes on.

how much RAM determines how much stuff can be stored in memory at a given time. it's like the size of your pickup truck. if you have 1 ton of stuff, and you need to move it. if you have a 1 ton pickup, you can move it in one trip. but if you have a half ton pickup, you have to make two trips to move it all, and it takes longer.

certain types of actions on your computer use a lot of memory, like photo, video, and music editing. when you need 2 GB of memory to do all the stuff you are asking your computer to do, and you only have one, it places the excess in the page file on your computer, which is a place on your hard drive that is set aside to act as supplemental memory. this is good, but the trouble is, accessing data in your page file is MUCH MUCH slower than getting it from your RAM. In fact, getting things RAM is at least 1,000 times faster than getting things from your harddrive.

Think about it this way, if you are in your kitchen and you want milk, if it's in your fridge (RAM) you can get it very quickly. But if you don't have it in your fridge, and you have to go to the store, it will take a lot longer before you can get any milk.

This is what happens when you don't have enough memory. Your computer goes painfully slow.

As the other posters said, all computers perform better with more memory, just make sure you get the right kind for your system.

its better bcoz 4gb ram can manage more amount of program data in it than a 2gb ram. But this purely depends on the usage of the system. I feel 2gb is more than enough for a normal user. 4gb is mainly meant for production servers.

The same way as four bedroom condo is better then two bedroom condo or one bedroom condo. You have more room to put all the stuff inside and it cost a bit more

because it has more memory space so you can run more programs at once and you can multi task very easy. Newer programs need more ram
