it is not difficult
you dont need much knowledge, except that you know how to tell you computer that it has to boot from a cd.

1) download and burn a linux : say ubuntu
2) put the cd into the cd drive of you pc
3) start up the pc, it should boot from the cd.
4) follow the steps everything will be taken care off.

If you want to install a different Operating System, just boot with the CD and format the drive. That will take care of removing Windows 98. You can't just delete an Operating System if that is what your PC is using.

Just like the others have said simply put the distro of your choice in and it will scrap the junk windows for you. I would suggest Freespire for your first time out and then move into a ubuntu based distro. There are lots of sites that tell you how to make your first CD from a download. But if you are unable to get it done they can be bought off ebay www.distrowatch.com, and other places for very cheap. Also you can get books and mags from barnes and noble that include CDs and DVDs with different distros.

download a linux diribution
burn to a cd
reboot
boot from cd rom
follow step on installing menu
if u want to keep 98 / install linux in another partition
install

All you need to do is burn your favorite Linux distro to disk then boot from the disk.

If you don't have a CD burner, you can order free Ubuntu CDs from here:

It takes about 2 months to arrive.

make you a Floppy start up Disk for window 98 and in the Black screen on boot up type FDISK it will wipe the MBR and hard drive
clean than Load Linux

Also type Fdisk How To in Google for more help
