Hate to break any branches here, but from the serious side (I really like your puns and double entendres) ... but ... yeah, they do sometimes. It's a specialtree and very expensive but if it's a cherished species that is sick, they will dig it up to examine the roots for disease and if there's a chance to save it by performing this surgery, they'll give it a go. They try to get to the root of the compost matter. There ... have I redeemed myself at all? Gotta make like a tree myself and leaf.

Root canal surgery is very serious. The comparison would be brain surgery in us.They do perform it but only when absolutely necessary.
