I'm not sure about the water breaking part, but I will tell you that when I was in the delivery room with my sister, it did smell. Bad. I can't really describe it, but it was not pleasant. When I had my daughter, I didn't notice a smell, but I was also preoccupied with giving birth.

I just had my baby yesterday. So I have this fresh in mind... The water did not smell nasty to me...feels nasty more than anything..it keeps leaking after it breaks,so if you're sitting/laying in bed waiting for contractions and stuff, it feels gross..(until you have an epidural,if you get one, then you wont feel anything) I had to change the pad they put under me about a dozen times..
and NO the baby did NOT smell nasty at all, he was a little wet, but beautiful (you will think the same thing too,you wont be worrying whether or not she/he stinks by that time, lol)
Hope this information helps.. Good luck and gratz on your pregnancy!

When your water breaks, it doesn't smell - it's pretty much odourless. The delivery room smells like most hospital rooms, a kind of medicinal smell (the smell comes from whatever disinfectants and antiseptics they use, you don't contribute much to the smell). They will wipe up your baby before handing it to you and he/she will have a new baby smell that you'll probably find pleasant.

Um no..lol thats silly, But i did have a mirror and got to see everything down their and OMG you would not believe what comes out of their AFTER your baby! LOL a bunch of green, red, and white stuff and a big gush of what looks like water.. like BIG GUSH. (sorry if im being to graphic) but its true and then the afterbirth doesnt hurt but its still weird, my midwife actually took the placenta and showed us all parts of it and what it did for the baby. Can you say a labor to never forget ? lol But to answer your question No none of the stuff smelled for me. even when the doctor broke my water it didnt hurt, smell or anything their was just ALOT of fluid it didnt feel like i peed myself at all it felt like somebody poured a bucket of water on me x2! lol but all in all my labor and birth went great! so dont worry about the little stuff it will be the best day of your life :)

I don't remember any smell, but really I don't think I would have noticed with everything else going on. Smells are the last thing on your mind. (except for that dang guy in the next room when I was in triage, he had sooooo much cologne on I thought I was going to puke!!). When they hand you the baby he/she will be covered in all kinds of stuff that gets all over you, but you won't even care, I promise!! Congratulations :)

The instructor in our birthing class to us when your water breaks it has a sweet smell to it. I never had the opportunity to find out as I was induced with both pregnancies and my water was broken at the hospital.
My 1st son was cleaned up before they handed him to me but the 2nd was not. He had no weird odor.
It's funny all the crazy questions you think of when you're pregnant with your 1st! Keep on asking!
Congrats & Good Luck!

My daughter's father said the only smell was the placenta....he said it smelled like cheese nips (I'm thinking a combo of blood and tissue...that' s probably accurate). Other than that...I absolutely guarentee you that you will not notice a smell when they put your baby your chest when he/she is born. You are way too in love to notice!!!! (And no...your water doesn't have a noticable smell.)

I had three babies, and I do not remember a smell. The last thing on your mind when you finish delivering and holding your baby for the first time is "Ew she stinks!!". LOL I do not even think you will be worrying about that.
Good Luck!
