Because most people can find 'a poll' somewhere that says their candidate of choice is winning and that makes them feel good. The only poll that matters is the on taken in the voting booth.

Because the media pushes them as indicators and because the candidates themselves see them that way.

Why would Tancredo bail out if that wasn't the case?

While early polls certainly don't tell you what the final picture will be (or Bush would have faced Howard Dean), they are things to look at to help determine what issues may be the "deciders" for voters that year.

Oh the polls are very close if you realize the polls almost never have as many republicans in the sample as who actually vote nor do they have a percentage close to the number of democrats who vote

The major polls (Zogby, Rasmussen, etc) have a good track record of predicting the outcome of elections. I don't know where you got the idea that they're "never even close".

The same reason people are obsessed with American Karaoke every time they start a new season. A lot of people simply don't have anything better to do.
