The schools were extremely strict and the boys were disciplined with canes.

Schooling began and ended at a younger age back then. Boys were accepted into college, often at ages like 12 to 13.

It was hard work. They had to study things that would be too hard for most people today. They had very specific and demanding teaching.

It also produced a level of scholarship which is almost unheard of today.

Read Charles Dickens 'Nicholas Nickelby' and his descriptions of Dotheboys Hall. Whilst what he wrote was fiction, it was based on research Dickens carried out into boys boarding schools in Yorkshire - and Dotheboys Hall is a real place - I used to live just two miles from it
