I do not spend my money on anything besides food and rent. Rent is high in this area and I basically live day to day. I stay home on my days off.

I don't have any. I can't afford it & live anywhere at the same time, & my boss won't even offer it at a group price. (I am not asking her to pay it, just negociate us a decent group price)

Wow, are some people ignorant...I have a 13 yr old son, we don't go out all the time. I have 2 cars, one 8 years old, a station wagon with no heat, as I can't quite afford to fix it, so that gets driven in fair weather, & the one I bought to have heat is 7 years old, but has a Honda engine, that I know will serve well. I own both, neither is financed. My TV is as old as my son. I have to keep him clothed, & anyone who has a teen knows how fast they grow & wear clothes out. I don't begrudge those who have it, & I am working on my resume to find a place that at least OFFERS it, so I can buy it! Get real folks!

I've only had health insurance for a couple of years of my life (I'm 57) The best rate I've been able to come up with is over $1,000 a month, or close to $14,000 a year. I am considered by the insurance companies, a very high risk because of my profession. My life insurance, "just" to cover my mortgage , is over $1,000 a year. Disability insurance, just to cover my mortgage payment, is well over $1,000 a year, and that only covers the mortgage payment, no living expenses.
If I had health insurance, there would be nothing left for me to live on.
I've met all the requirements for disability for the last 6 years, but I can't afford to quit working till the day they roll my rotting carcus over the side. If I get sick enough I can't work, I'm screwed. I'll just have to hope I die quick, so my family wouldn't won't end up on the street.

This country will probably NEVER have universal health care. That would mean the health insurance, and related industries would be out of business. There's too much money at stake for them to ever allow it to happen.

When I graduated from college there was several months I was not covered by insurance. Even when I got a job I had to wait 30 days for it to kick in. If something catastrophic happened during that time period I would have been screwed. Lack of health insurance is definitly a problem that needs to be addressed. Despite what the Republicans tell you, having a national health insurance system would actually SPUR enteprenuership. This is due to the fact that many people don't want to leave their jobs and try to start their own endeavers because health insurance is tied to employment and they are too scared to give it up. As for taxes going up to cover the costs of such a system, companies and inviduals have to PAY healthcare companies premiums now anyway. So I don't get what the difference is if you pay for healthcare in the form of premiums or more taxes. Besides, Republicans waste 10 billion dollars a month in Iraq, so if we got rid of that war perhaps we could afford some programs that would benefit AMERICANS instead of IRAQUIS with OUR MONEY.

Too many.

I live in the UK and work in the UK healthcare system. Most of us who work in the NHS can not understand why the US has such poor care for its population. For the record, unless you die suddenly, everyone will need healthcare. Having a system that you pay little for when not ill, and are beggared when you are is short sighted. Very in fact, as if all goes well with you, and I hope it does, then you will all reach old age.

In the US, despite spending more on health care, due to the insane system you have, some of your health outcomes are worse than democracies in western europe. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Health_care#Economics Notably life expectancy and infant mortality rates. The reason for that is money goes into profit, whereas in Western Europe, it goes into health care.

Yes, there are problems with all the health care systems in Europe, but they are better than what you have. In the UK, there are waiting lists, but if you need emergency treatment, you get it that day.

If you are proud to live in the richest and most powerful country, great, but remember that babies are born and die in the USA that would live if born in Western Europe. How is that right?

Think about what I have said. In the meantime, I hope you all have a merry Christmas and a Happy New Year.

Me... I worked for the same company for most of my life.. Made a very good income.. I had 3 heart attacks on the job, one which i actually died from but was revived. The other two were when i returned back to work after each and every heart attack, and the stress level was so high that i had two more heart attacks on the job. I am now placed on perminent disability and live off that disability which is far less then i was earning.. The company understandably dropped my health insurance and gave me an option of paying a little over $1000.00 a month to retain that insurance.. Seeing that that eats up quite a bit of my monthly income I am unable to afford such care and pay my other obligations such as housing utilities and food.. (I don't go out and I don't buy anything except necessary items) My prescriptions alone costs me close to 900 a month on top of the insurance, so I would have to pay close to 2000.00 a month JUST for health care and the prescriptions to keep me alive.

You tell me whether you could afford such a burden? I know i can't so my ONLY choice is to risk my health and not have insurance of any form. What is the solution??? I can't get a job to make up the difference, or am I allowed back in the work force as my doctors and companies I apply to will NOT take the risk. So the only choices i have is not to eat, have a home, have utilities OR have no health care or the prescriptions which keeps me alive.. YOU TELL ME THE ANSWER I DON'T HAVE ONE...

I don't expect or want ANYONE to pay my insurance burden for me,or any other burden i have.. (have not taken one dime from anyone my entire life) but when you are completely excluded from the system due to a major happening , something is wrong someplace. I am NOT looking for a handout from anyone, I just want an affordable solution.

And to Wayne G... you are so far off in your thinking.. NOT all people have the luxury of your simple solution.. Like I said.. I pay ONLY what is needed to survive.. Yes I own a car (paid off) yes i have a mortgage aquired before I had the heart attacks but the banks just don't forgive you of a home loan due to life happenings, yes i have a TV, cable and phone.. all paid for by my previous company (obviously was a good employeee and the company I worked for is helping me because i was an excellent employee) so i don't spend a dime there..Don't even try and say why doesn't your company pay the health insurance instead because the cost is even more then they can afford and the little help they give me is far above what i expected and is actually a very kind gester and is appreciated... I don't drink alcohal so no money loss there, I don't go on vacations, basically i live in between the walls of my home and just try and survive.. I even raised both of my boys completely alone (full custody) without help financially or any type of support from their mother.. I never even took advantage of some of the help that is out there for single parents. I paid my way for many years and still am trying to pay my way to this day.. The problem falls in the cost of the insurance companys and drug companies. So for you to sit on your pedistal and say ALL people just want something for free you have no clue.. There are some of us that don't want that type of help but just unable to afford insurance due to the cost and a life happenings BEYOND their control..

On any given day I think it's about 45 million. That included those who lack insurance only temporarily as well as those who choose not to have insurance.

I'm in the Army, so I have that awesome government health insurance. Haven't seen a dentist on the Army's dime in two years.

It is easy for people to be ignorant on this issue. I pay for my insurance too but it is very high and if there is a bad problem deductables are outrageous. I am an administrator for an early childhood program and people who have four year degrees struggle because insurance rates are so high. Our country sucks on this issue. The better question is how many children do not have insurance and why did the president veto the last bill that would have helped America's children.

I have medical and dental coverage that's paid for with tax payer money and provided by the county that I work for. Health Care is a Human Rights issue. It's a RIGHT, not a privilege. Those who believe that only those who can afford Health Care should have it are probably Republicans who consider themselves "Christians," when really, they're just elitists. Jesus said "that which you have done to the least of those, you have done to me." (Matthew 25:31-46)

Of those who are living without insurance, how many of you are making car payments, going out to dinner, have credit card debt or have more than $300 a month in unnecessary bills or expenses? Because if you do, maybe you should be wiser with your money and use it for health insurance rather than piss it away at bars, buying flat screen tv's and the like.

Anyone can walk into any hospital emergency room and get treatment. Anyone can go to a clinic and get treatment. I don't need my taxes raised 50% so the vast majority of people who chose not to insure themselves can have it paid for by me.

if you want to nationalize insurance, how about nationalizing car insurance? I'd love to have everyone in the country pay my insurance.

How about property taxes? why don't we nationalize that. millions of people don't pay property taxes because they rent an apartment. they are not paying their fair share. maybe it's time tha they do. I'd love to have someone pay my property taxes

Or maybe we should all try to be a little more responsible for our own lives and not think the rest of the world owes us anything but to be left alone to live our lives in peace without the government interfering in it
