Hello Peace, I have eperienced what you are saying about the enemy being closer than the friend. As a meditator I come across all sorts of people that in my ordinary life I just would not have encountered and this has given me loads of wonderful opportunities to explore many layers of my own psyche. I have one friend who is a great enemy also and because of this is also a great teacher for me. I value my contact with this person immensely and over the years have learned lots through this relationship that simply would not have been possible to learn from someone who you would perceive as an ordinary friend. The best way to take a look at your self is through the mirror that others present to you and to watch your actions and reactions with them. Some people we are attracted to, others we are repulsed by and generally stay away from, but if we embrace everyone the same and watch what they trigger inside us, then we truly get a good look at ourselves, some of which is not very pleasant, but then the truth rarely ever is.

Ohhh absolutely. I used to be my own closest enemy and worst friend. I didn't care about myself at all and I did stupid things. Luckily, I had someone else to be my BEST friend and now I'm not my own worst enemy anymore. : )

I think so. Because you can be really kind to other people but then ignore some of your own probelms just to be with them.

I think this is very much possible when the voice in our heads has a (self-)derisive attitude.
