It depends on whether or not the glass has been tempered or not.
Normal glass will melt, turning a red/yellow color. Tempered glass would begin to melt but at a much higher temperature.

It depends on the type of glass. Bottles and other relatively cheap glasses will perform differently to toughened / heat strengthened / laminated glass.
Generally a piece of glass placed on a mantlepiece or in front of a fire wont alter its state unless there are inclusions within the glass.
Typically glass will melt or alter it's shape at a much higher temp than expected.
All glass fire guards should be toughened to BS6206a and will have already undergone a toughening process involving temps from around 650 degrees.
Have a look for a small stamp on the glass, if it has been toughened / heatstrengthened there should be one.
Untreated glass can fracture, into larger pieces, more like most peoples vision of broken glass as opposed to small regular shaped fragments.

A regular wood fire in a fireplace is not hot enough to melt glass.
If you put the glass in the fireplace then start a fire, the glass with heat up slowly and nothing will happen.
If you put the glass in a large fire or on the red hot coals of a large fire, some parts will heat up faster than other parts and it will break. I glass ball may explode because the air inside will expand quickly. An open glass container or a piece of glass will probably just get a lot of cracks.
If take hot glass from a fire and put it into cold water, it will shatter and may explode. The water should keep the glass from flying too far though.

You usually have to have a furnace to get glass hot enough to melt. It takes something over two thousand degrees F to make it a liquid. Read up on glass blowing will tell you all the facts. Google search put in Glass blowing and you will get a lot of info.

It will melt. That's how glass is made in the first place.
Glass does not disintegrate at high temps.
If ever cold water is sprinkled on hot glass it will shatter. Be careful. Don't even do this for fun.

Allot of foolish answers here.... A glass will melt if put in the middle of an open fire, It might crack if you take it from a freezer and throw it in.
Heated glass becomes britle before it melts
and If you put a red hot bottle in water is will explode if you block the end
Tried it out camping, made bottle torpedoswith a long stick blocking the opening of red hot bottles.

Depends on the type of glass.
Normal glass will melt ( if hot enough ), That's how you can blow glass to form shapes.
Safety glass will shatter as it is pre stressed.
Although either glass could do either if the conditions were correct

It will crack and eventually melt if the fire is hot enough. I once tried heating a pint glass of water on an open fire (a stupid thing to do) and it shattered.
