Oxygen is the second most reactive element in the periodic table. Anything that contains carbon and hydrogen, such as an organic compound, will burn with oxygen when the temp and concentration of O is high enough. The carbon is converted to CO2 and the Hydrogen is converted to H2O. Many other substances will also combine with oxygen.

Non metallic elements combine to form non-metal oxides These oxides will dissolve in water and react to form acids..
Metals will combine with oxygen to from metal oxides. Many metal oxides will dissolve in water to form bases.

2 S + 3O2 --> 2 SO3

SO3 + H2O --> H2SO4 an acid

2 Ca + O2 -->2CaO

CaO + H2O --> Ca(OH)2 a base
