I work in a grocery store in Wisconsin. We have a "card all" program, meaning we card everyone, regardless of age, for alcohol or tobacco products. This was done to reduce liability for store and cashier, reduce offense taken by those who are card, or not carded, and keep alcohol out of the hands of teenagers. Overall, people have taken well to it. However, there are several people, usually older gentlemen, who refuse to show me their ID. A coworker said that there is a law stating if a customer is purchasing alcohol, either in a store or at a bar, and ID is asked of them (no matter their age), they must provide it. Otherwise the seller has the right to refuse the sale. Is this true? Has anyone heard of this?

Daniel- the point isn't that he is obviously over 21...I am not stupid, I can tell he is in his 60's. The point is our store has a policy that says we card everyone regardless of age. These older men say they don't have to because they are obviously old enough and give me a hard time. I would like to have a secondary reason, such as "the law states if I ask for it you must show it". It would just help me out a lot when dealing with these people. They have to open their wallet to pay...so its not inconvenient...they just think they are above the policy.

Ok, just to make it extra clear. It is my store's policy. I have no choice in the matter. So if they have grey hair and a cane, I still have to do it. We have regular "secret shoppers" to evaluate our performance and make sure the policies are being upheld. I just have to do it. I'm looking for a little extra something to say to these people who get angry so they might lose the attitude next time and just follow the rules.

You don't need "another good reason" to ask for ID. It's a store policy and you could lose your job for not doing it. If a customer refuses, refuse the sale, calmly and politely, and refer the customer to your manager or store owner.

I'm 45 (look OLDER) and am regularly asked for my ID when I purchase beer, I make a joke of it and laugh! For those customers who can't seem to believe that it's your manager's policy, not yours ... all you have to do is be nice, polite, refuse the sale, and give them your manager's name (or page your manager to your register).

I think so. I think it is crazy if an individual refuses to show their idea, when asked, sometimes you just don't know. I would say you should use your own judgment when it comes to customers who are clearly over the age. I would suggest that your store you work in puts up a sign indicating that it must be shown by all customers when purchasing the following items. Surely it is understandable if you get a 50 year old man in there, and you know it and you card him, simply explain it is store policy, tell them it is there to protect you, although you can clearly see that indeed he is beyond the age limit. Of course insert your own words to conform to your personality.

Some stores require ID to be checked on all purchases. Check with your manager and see what they require. It's best to check always, regardless of age. That way you are in a routine to always ask & then when PD does a compliance check of all the stores, you and your manager don't get hit with very expensive fines for selling alcohol to underage person.

A Take this up with your supervisor, These people will tell you what you want to hear just to make points, That's the Y/A way. Just like the person after me they cant correctly spell the name of the store she claim to work at. More B.S. If that is a requirement of your employment so be it, You must comply if the customer likes it or not. You are being paid to follow instructions that's the bottom line.

Yes, there is no such thing as a right to buy alcohol free of ID. In fact, the store doesn't have to do business with anyone they don't want to. They can refuse to sell you anything at all, be that a can of soup or a six-packs. So yes, you can refuse selling especially once your supervisor backs you up on it.

It's true in MN. I worked at a liqueur store and I carded everyone expect people I knew who was of age. If anyone refused to show I.D. I showed them the door.

Yes of course you have the right to refuse the sale...I know at my work you have to right to refuse the sale of alcohol regardless, even if they do show you an ID. If you ask for it and they don't give it to you, simply don't sell it to them, even if they are 80 years old...

Well, even if that particular item isn't mentioned in the law, the seller has the right to refuse service to anyone. Don't worry about it. If they give you trouble you can always call a manager over, but if it was me I would just refuse to sell to them.
