Over two yr.s ago worked with a vet, his daughter on winter day over 2 yr.s ago brought in a Shepherd Mix dog and told her day that it was her friends, neighbors dog and they wanted her to take it and find it a home. Well Jessica (as we called her) was 2 yr.s chained to a tree with no shelter, no muscles, all skin and bone, after months of treatments, for fleas, worms, spay, weight and muscle gain, taught her how to play, and on it was time to find her a new home. Family friends of mine lost there dog and were looking for another, I told them about Jessica they can to the clinic to see her after a chat with the doctor they took her home. I'm not sure about pics from over 2 yr.s ago, I do recall the doc. taking some, her medical records were documented, and so last night these family friends get a call from a lawyer saying the are being sued for pain, heatache and want moneys??? I don't get any of this but shouldn't they go after the doctor or his daughter and how in the world after

You may not have much to worry about but I would consult with an attorney. I don't think it will be that much. Maybe check out the Animal Legal Defense Fund. They might be able to provide some more direction. I would speak to the vet involved because they may be able to offer some assistance. My mom used to work at a vet. One of the cats she adopted was abandoned by someone over a $400 vet bill. Maybe the vet can send them a bill for services owed as well as the new owner? I don't know if that's the best route. The best thing to do is to find a good lawyer and meet them with them to discuss. You might have nothing to worry about but then again you are taking a huge risk by just letting things go.
Don't risk a lot for a little.

They should bring all documents they have regarding the dog. Enlist the veterinarian's help if needed. The lawyer should be able to fight this and all the costs could be recouped from the people suing if they lose.

Seriously, consult with a lawyer. Don't risk a lot for a little.

The Vet has it on record as being turned into him for adoption. He should also have the condition of the dog on record as well. After two years, I doubt they have anything to worry about.
Some attorneys offer a free consultation. Check your phone book to find one, just in case it's needed.
But under NO circumstances are the people who adopted the dog to give it up willingly or because they feel threatened. Only a Judge can decide if they have to give the dog back. If it's taken to court, the people can represent themselves, and be sure to have the Vet testify and bring the records of the dog. The Vet can actually hang these people by answering the questions.
