Who Is The Rich Man?

One day a wealthy father took his son on a trip to the country so that the son could see how the poor lived. They spent a day and a night at the farm of a very poor family. When they got back from their trip, the father asked his son, "How was the trip?" "Very good, Dad!" "Did you see how poor people can be?" "Yeah!" "And what did you learn?" The son answered, "I saw that we have a dog at home, and they have four. We have a pool that reaches to the middle of the garden; they have a creek that has no end. We have imported lamps in the house; they have the stars. Our patio reaches to the front yard; they have the whole horizon." When the little boy was finished, the father was speechless. His son then added, "Thanks Dad for showing me how poor we are!"

Thanks for the kind response :)

A touching parable. But............

In human psychology the other side is always greener. It is a beautiful and poetic, but in reality if we ask the people who are living there, the story will be different. If the feeling what the son got is felt by all the people who are living at the farm, how beautiful the world will be.....but is not possible because, life is different and imagination is different.

I liked the answer of "needtobe" also because inspite of his richness the boy is unhappy. Whether you are rich or poor learn to be happy. We have to learn a lesson from the story "Fox and the sour grapes". If the grapes are not in your reach you think they are sour.

To avoid disappointment of achieving someting - focus on the disadvantages in that particular thing.

Thanks for giving such a beautiful parable and opinions expressed are very interesting and varied

In the eyes of the son; the poor man was the rich man. But because of his insight into the situation he himself is now rich for being able to put his life into persepctive. I always hoped that the father in this parable was humbled and blessed by his son's outlook.

Have a great day!

Everyone is. The son for having a beautiful outlook on life. The father for showing his son another side of life and raising him to have the outlook that he does on the positive. The 'poor' because you may not always get what you want, but you always have what you need.

This was a great story. Thank you.

well, they can afford to keep four dogs because they don't have much to do(stocks,investments,14 hrs a day job just to make enough to survive, big mansions to maintain, trips, maids or they keep 4 dogs cuz it's easier to have than children-dogs are less money maintaining)..the creek doesn't belong to them,it belongs to nature..any rich individual can buy a creek..heck ,even an island( i know a sultan who bought an island off the coast of borneo).. but the pool BELONGS to the rich man,if u know what i mean...same goes for the stars..they're everywhere..the stars and the ...i need not mention about the horizon too..this is all stories just to make us feel that there is always people out there that is much worse than us..the moral of the story is,if you're rich count your blessings and try to become even more rich..if you're poor,do something to change it,not just accept it as faith or curse God..:)

The son is the rich one because he saw life in a different way.

I agree with the son, As long as they were happy, you can not judge them by being "poor" that is the way they live and love life...

Oh, the innocence of children. Sometimes I miss those days when you could see things from a different perspective and use your imagination to make a bad situation seem good.

Okay, back to reality!!

Would be a different reaction if he had taken him to the city to see how poor people live.
