Do it yourself!

Buy your domain name (shouldn't cost more than $25 for that unless you want something really sought after) first. Then, choose a hosting company. Many offer free hosting packages for just the basics: you could try www.webhero.com, that's who I use and they're great. www.angelfire.com also offer free hosting. Webhero also offer "webheros" that will build your site for you at a negotiable price - they maintain a directory of web developers who take on projects.

Most hosting companies have a built in WYSIWYG ("what you see is what you get") editor where you can put together basic pages with links, text, pictures, etc...

If you want to build a website, I would suggest learning HTML, CSS and PHP first. These are not difficult to learn, there's loads of online support to help you, and it gives you total control over your site. If you want to get visibility on the search engines, learn the basics of SEO (search engine optimization) before even naming your pages!

Depending on what you want, a 10 - 12 page site could vary from $25 per page to $100 per page if you want things like guestbooks, etc... You also have to look at what is included in that price. Domain name? Hosting plan? Maintenance and upkeep of the site? You could advertise on a forum like that at www.sitepoint.com and get offers from a variety of developers.

Again - I suggest just doing it yourself. I started off using webhero's WYSIWYG editor "sitebuilder" and now code everything by hand on my database-driven site. It took me about a year to get where I am, my main work is at http://www.centsible.net.

For an extremely basic website you can use Word Templates. If you are still considering using a program like Dreamweaver, you should pay a web master. Development Software like Dreamweaver costs a fortune and it is tough to learn. Also, many times hosting is included, so you won't have to do anything except tell them what you want. As stated, it is about $150 per page for a very good web master and it is well worth it if the person is really great.

btw, Laura, I like your site. I like the template. Maybe you should offer your services. Make a little $Xmas $Cash.

1) Depends on what's on it, not how many pages it is. 1 complex page costs more than 15 simple ones. You pay by the hour, whether it's quoted by the hour or the job. 2) A US host would charge about US$4/month for a small site. And about $20/year for a domain name. 3) See 1. 4) See 1. A site can run from a few hundred dollars (US) to tens of thousands. A logo is art work - same price range.

Well, you can get a template from templatemonster.com, which range from free to $x.
You can always tweak them if you need to, but they almost always include 5-6 general pages.
