A money order looks a bit like a check. Your name will be written on the money order. The amount is printed on the money order at the time of purchase.

When someone buys a money order they pre-pay the amount in cash at the time of purchase. They also pay a fee to have the "money order company" hold their money until the money order is cashed. The fees can be anywhere from 99 cents to several dollars. In some places you can buy money orders with a debit card but NEVER WITH CREDIT CARDS.

Money orders are usually pretty safe. They are getting a bit harder to cash now because they are a bit easier to fake than they used to be. The easiest way to deal with a money order is to deposit it in your checking or savings account just like a check.

I would accept a money order purchased from the U.S. Post office. I'd also accept a Travelers Money Order or Western Union Money Order because that is what's available in my town and I know what they look like.

Charles,

the money order works like a regular check, you have your name or payees name on the front and you can deposit it in the bank or a bank can pay the money over the counter.
